Hey

Im borrowing a 16mm camera from a friend of mine, and i usually work with digital formats..but i wanted to try shooting old school for a short movie im making...but i have a question...how would i capture the footage to my computer? Usually if ur working with digital..u just pop in the MiniDV tape into the VCR connecting through Firewire or w.e else you can do..but how would i go about capturing the 16mm footage?

oh boy. what did your friend do so far with it?

basically first you buy film, then you shoot. then you find a lab to process the film and then you have two options:
a) play it with a projector and film it off screen (in which case you might consider filming 8mm instead)
b) get it transferred to either miniDV or BetaSP tapes which you can capture into your NLE (BEtaSP only if you have analogue inputs, DigiBeta via SDI). transferring 16mm to tape is pricey, so beware how much you shoot. a good way to keep costs low is to watch the transferred film on screen and then cut out scenes before actually getting it "mirrored" to tape. (do you say mirrored in english? we say that in german to this process).

i estimate about $ 40-50 per minute 16mm until it is on tape.
