New Avid studio -- best deal ever?

I think Avid is pretty desperately trying to cling to their market share. I also imagine (though this may be way off) that they make more on hardware than software.

I wouldn't write Avid off so quickly, either. Because it has a reputation of being less accessible to consumers, there are those who think "real editors" use Avid. Even though it isn't true, I keep Avid on my website and resume so I don't lose business.

Looks cool, bringing the AVID name to the consumer products line, as an upgrade path from the pinnacle stuff, which they've owned for a while. If the interface is like the real thing it would be interesting to learn on, unlimited tracks and all the plug-ins should make it a real value. No mention of if or how it handles 24p or multiple resolution/framerate timelines. Lack of pro codecs indicates its market position, but may be good enough for a lot of users. Very consumer oriented specs, No mention of DNXHD support. Finally a Final Cut Express level program for windows. This plus Lightworks free could be something to play with.

Even if you're a long time Mac FCP guy like me it would be cool to build a cheap windows box and slap an AVID sticker on it.

This looks like a pretty cut down version of the editing software, and be advised that avid uses avx format plugins - what works on an avid platform may well not work in fcp

but it should handle h.264 Prores 422 exported out of FCP, right?

I'm thinking I just might do my regular editing in FCP, export, and use the "Avid" just for Magic Bullet Looks....

No, Avid is windows and mac. I'm not sure if the deal applies to both, though.

Avid's pro line is MAC/PC their consumer line is PC only. Avid Studio is the consumer product. An update of Pinnacle.

Avid Studio is not similar to the other Avid software. So, it is not similar to Avid Media Composer.

Avid Studio is a brand new product and is a consumer and advanced consumer product. It is a step up Pinnacle Studio product with more tracks and features.

It is based on Liquid (now discontinued), but lacks many professional tools.

It only supports Windows® 7, Windows Vista® (SP2)

So, even if it has the Avid name, it is much more a Pinnacle product.

Has anyone taken advantage of this? I'm still thinking of buying this just for Magic Bullet Looks. But I'm wondering if the version of MBL is only compatible with Avid Studio or if it would be usable on FCP/Premiere?

I would suspect it is only on the avid studio, which is windows only so no fcp obviously. If you are working in premiere primarily, you're only going to use magic bullet at the final output anyway so you could just output in a codec that the other software supports and apply your looks. Its a fairly cheap buy-in and since the other plug-ins are bonus you may find that they will work with other stuff on your system.

This combined with the extra stuff bundled with vegas movie studio platinum, could make for a fairly formidable system at a relatively low cost.

I have this and love it. I haven't used FCP or other "expensive" editing software so can't compare it to them. I got it because I wanted MBL. It's easy to use.

This Pinnacle Studio HD Ultimate Collection v15 deal is tempting wth Magic Bullet. However, I can't find any information about whether this NLE supports full HD 50p/60p. I've checked the AVID website but can't see a mention. I believe it's 32bit but compatible with 64bit without actually using the extra power. If anyone who uses this system can tell me if I can edit Sony AVCHD 50p on it that would be much appreciated.

I downloaded the Avid Studio trial, it is a home product with nice features. Editing is pretty fast, but render is something I didn't get correctly: sometimes what I have in timeline is not showing as result. I'm not 100% sure, but looks like there are some render/update bugs.
Some nice effects included (these pre-built effects, title motion, but I couldn't find the Mlooks in the trial.
I don't think I could use it in a commercial project, but for my family AVCHD videos can be an option. DVD authoring, etc.

Magic Bullet Looks is watered down (no fly-out options on the right, you have to use one of the presets). I think Looks is more for grading, not color correction. Support seems iffy. I was pawned off between companies while trying to fix a commonly known export bug. The registration codes on my box no longer worked for download fixes. Finally gave up (renting after effects for the moment).
