I asked them a question on Vimeo about the setup for the Sony RX10 and never got a response.
The question was about audio.
For interviews this would be great.
More like my BMCC where i can record direct to ProRes but still have to use my Zoom for audio.
It looks like the Blade has an input for a microphone. If you plug that in, does it override the audio
coming from the HDMI???

It's basically a Samurai Blade but with HDMI only for $995. It's going to take a few weeks to get them out to retailers since they announced it today.

Thats a nice bundle.

This is very tempting. I owned a ninja 2 and I always liked the idea but I got so many problems with no response from the atomos forum. the recording would stop randomly at almost each take that was longer than a few minutes. It was extremely frustrating... I tried many things, change cables, SSD drives, change configurations, change camera... I just a did a quick search it seems like people got those problems even with the blade:

Too bad because I would totally jump on this if it wasn't for my previous experience with atomos ninja 2

1.) What's the biggest loss by losing SDI? Looking at picking up an external recorder but have always shot internal

2.) Do these units allow output to an external DVD recorder with the OSD burned in? I ask because I want to be able to display timecode and burn the image + timecode directly to DVD without going through post

Is the only difference here from the Ninja 2 being the screen resolution or what?

And focus peaking, zebras, waveform monitor, vector scope, false color and so forth. Lots of killer software features built in. This is basically a killer camera mounted LCD monitor for a DSLR with ProRes recording and playback built in. Think of a 5" Lilliput 1280x720 monitor that actually looks good, has great features but can also record ProRes to a $50.00 2.5" HDD. This thing has the pixel density of the iPhone.

Down sides of course are needing extra batteries and yet another thing to worry about. It will be interesting to see how well the GH4 200mbit mode stands up to a ProRes recording. Outside of the 4:2:0 and 8bit they should be comparable.

Oh snap. So what ur saying is I should return this smallhd dp4 and get one of these puppies for my eventual GH4 purchase. Well maybe should wait to see exactly how good their focus peaking is. Also isnt the gh4 going to put out 10 bit 4:2:2 out of the HDMI?

Look at the reviews for the Samurai Blade. It's the exact same display. I saw it at NAB and drooled. Plus if you really want accurate color you can buy the Spyder calibrator for $149. It comes pre-calibrated. One bummer is it's windows only.

Aaaaaaaaaand...just ordered from Markertek.

In stock supposedly, and it seems like it comes with a free carry case? We'll see...

Good find. I just put in my order too. Free shipping and comes with the case. Anyone interested in a Ninja 2? :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

anyone?

When will Atomos release a recorder that can accept a 1080p60 signal?!!!! Ugh. The Odyssey 7 and 7Q are the only ones that do this.

If you don't have a SDI output on a camera you use than you don't need SDI.

I don't see why you couldn't do this I think its more about the software or DVD burner you have. Not sure if the TC can be overlaid during playback. Email Atomos on that one.

No sure about #2, but regarding #1, SDI won't look any different than HDMI but you can run SDI cables a lot longer than you can HDMI (which in this case probably doesn't matter given it's going to a recorder/monitor). But SDI will always give you a more secure connection than HDMI since it screws in so you don't have to worry as much about accidentally knocking out the connection during a shoot. They do make HDMI to SDI converters, but then I just feel that's one more thing that "can" go wrong in a chain, despite most being really reliable.

Yes the GH4 will have 4:22 10bit HDMI output. It will be a bit debatable how much advantage this will give a GH4. The GH4 can already record for long periods of time, Has focus peaking, zebras and a lot of great features and has a 200mbit Intro frame recording mode that should be similar to ProRes minus the 4:2:2 10bit of course. That 200mbit is recorded internally however for a nice compact workflow.

The Ninja Blade should make focusing even easier because of the screen resolution and it seems to have a couple more features the GH4 will not have like waveform monitor and vectorscope. Hard to say if one would need the higher res screen if they plan on using focus peaking anyway. Could be a horse a piece for focus peaking performance. If you must have an instant 4:2:2 10bit recording without any further processing than the Ninja Blade is the way to go. If you don't mind waiting to process your footage then I think shooting 4k on the GH4 may be a bit better. Downscaling 4k to HD gives you 4:4:4 and close to 10bit. It also eliminates a lot of artifacts from the compression so you could in theory get higher quality by just shooting 4k internally.
