New Anamorphic Converter

Regarding the following NEW Anamorphic Converter product that Century is creating:

http://www.centuryoptics.com/products/new/index.htm

1. Does anyone know what the difference will be between the Pana product, the existing Century Adapter and this new device?

2. Any speculation when this should be available for the DVX?

3. Is the quality difference noticable, is it worth the price difference?

First of all let me advise you that I am an employee of the Century Division of Schneider Optics.

1. the difference will be that instead of a two element, fixed focus design in a plastic housing, the Century will be a unit in a precision aluminum housing with 3 elements and an adjustable focus to allow sharp focus over the full Zoom range of the camera and at all working distances (with-in the focussing range) approx 5' to infinity.

2. The project has been star-crossed, but assuming the current prototype is satisfactory, production units should be available "around NAB time" - spring 2005. (we are crossing our fingers on this)

3. This is designed to be a much higher quality unit than the Panasonic, suitable for use on the much longer focal length Canon XL1/1s/2 zooms as well. Clearly you (the potential customers)will be the final judge of how good it is and if it is worth 2 - 3 times the price of the current Panasonic unit.

Frankly at its cost we suspect it may be a popular rental item, more than an end user purchase, but once again time will tell.

Re: New Anamorphic Converter

Bill, i don't know what your job is at Century Optics (sales, engineering...) but since i have an opportunity to talk with an "insider"...

Do you know by any chance what is C.O policy about foreign markets (i'm in Paris France) it's quite hard to find some of C.O products here and nearly impossible to rent them.

Having the opportunity to rent some of C.O's products (fisheye, anamorphic..etc) would be great for small/med production companies .

Thank You

Nico

Bill, thanks for the feedback. I was kinda hoping you would respond, as you are the best suited to answer those questions...

Re: New Anamorphic Converter

Encheval,

We recently changed our French agent from Emit, to Central Pro. You can find Central Pro's contact info on the Century Website, www.centuryoptics.com they might be able to tell you who has the products in rental in France.

It is possible that our previous agent has some rental inventory or knows something about other companies with rental inventory as well. I would suspect that they are relatively easy to locate if you are not already familiar with them.

Re: New Anamorphic Converter

The difference between the Century and the Panasonic should be night and day. While the Panasonic has a fixed-focus design, which makes it difficult to focus without paying extreme attention to aperture, focal distance, zoom setting and how they all interrelate... the Century lens has its own separate focusing element for the verticals. This means that you theoretically should be able to achieve 100% sharp focus at ANY aperture and ANY zoom setting and ANY distance to the subject.

Bill, if you want to send me a prototype or production model, I'd be pleased to do a thorough review/comparison of the new product.
