New AF100 Firmware-When it will came out?

Don't hold your breath for anything other than new Panny lens support. Other than critical initial fixes, Panasonic isn't in the business of adding new features via firmware updates, eventhough they could if they wanted to...

Any new stuff they can think of to improve the AF-100 they will repackage and make you buy in an AF-100a.

Maybe it's delayed so they can finish work on zoom focus assist, intraframe, and higher bit rate....

Only in our dreams....

One must be crazy or loaded to but a af100a if it came out with only minor enhancements.
Better wait for a more rubust improvement: larger sensor(apsc), at least 50mbs codec, 10bit 4:2:2, iso 100 - 25000 and 3 chip sensor with HDR.

In my opinion,
Panasonic will make a P2 based large sensor camera, not sure in an AF100 upgrade. The AF now is AVCCAM, next step in this brand is the AF100a always AVCCAM with minor improvements in the codec: bug fixes (clipping, yellow color cast etc). I know the actual firmware will be not not a great improvements, unfortunately.
Today's cameras have already better large sensors than m4/3. I don't think that Panasonic will adopt an APS-C sensor. IMHO,they'll release a super 35mm sensor P2 based camera,a totally different product. AF100/100a will remain in the AVCHD segment.

Happy New Year!

Much of the AF100's firmware is burnt onto ROM, & can't be upgraded.

How do you explain the previous firmware updates then? While it may be true that not every feature or function can be changed/updated - clearly the AF100's firmware has the ability, in general, to be upgraded.

Goodlord lets stick the firmware whining to one thread. I agree on most points of what we want but its pointless to keep posting the same thing ovr and over

The ROM information came from Jan some 6 months ago, or so, while discussing this exact same topic here on DVXuser.

They did it with the DVX...twice and the HVX. The cam you describe will just be a different model altogether.

Appears to be another price point @ $15 to 20-K (Sony/Canon) and I suspect Panasonic will have a competitive product in that category. Ours is a sub $5-k camera and what you see is what you get. I take Jan at her word when she says there will be no major firmware upgrades.

Meanwhile, I continue to enjoy shooting with my AF-100. After 40 years in the business I have yet to find the perfect camera, but I'm making more money with this one than any other I've ever owned. For those of you with buyers remorse NAB will undoubtably have new cameras for you to lust after :-)

How many firmware updates have there been? I've only updated the firmware once...when the released the first firmware update.

There has only been 1 update thus far. A new one is needed to make uses of some of the new lenses. It should come soon. My guess is the uses of the new lenses is the only change that'll be in the update.

Unless it fixes the "stepped" iris or adds auto gain, this minor firmware upgrade won't be of any interest to me. The tech guy at at Panasonic told me on the phone that he had repeated the stepped iris problem in the lab and that he submitted it as an issue to the engineering division. Whether they care or whether it can even be fixed with a firmware upgrade is doubtful. And Vitaliy_Kiselev has stated that he has "no interest" in hacking the AF100. Too bad.

"Stepped Iris" may be endemic to the lenses. The same thing happens on the GH2 if you use "shutter priority" mode, along with the audible clicking of the iris. But GH2 users aren't as bothered by this because the GH2 has an "aperture priority" mode where you can leave the iris fixed and let the camera control exposure by varying a combination of shutter speed and auto gain (auto ISO). The change in exposure is seamless, as shown in this clip where I go from indoors to outdoor bight sun. This is impossible to do with the AF100.

Side note: does anyone know if the new Panasonic motorized "X" zoom lenses are stepless iris?
