NEW ADAPTER: Redrock M2 Encore

Yep - we posted some additional footage with the Z5 here:

http://vimeo.com/3364763

shot on a steadicam in available twilight with no focus puller including wide lenses.

We are particularly impressed by the M2 Encore performance with the 18mm f3.5 zeiss (at the end of the clip)

It looks great, but I think I'm going to need to see before/after footage before I make the jump...

Brian, Can we get a downloadable 720 or 1080 H264 QT thats decent quality. I don't care if it is only 30 seconds and 100mb to download. These vimeo uploads are grainy, blocky, and too compressed. If I'm putting work up on 30' screens then these internet sample clips must be decent resolution to judge what I want to recommend to clients.

Looks good! BUT. Is it just me or do all the 35 adapter makers LOVE to only show the outdoors, I mean...on one hand yea, outside always looks great...but I cannot say i am remotely sold till I see some indoor stuff.

Whats the bokeh like on this new redrock adapter???

As good as the old redrock or as good as sgpro perhaps???

Here is a link to some indoor footage that I shot with a RRm2 and the new cinescreen.

I really like the new cinescreen.
cheers

Looks like e2e is very good and there's hardly (if) any vignetting. Some CA, but not much. This is very good, BUT......
What I don't like is that the talents don't 'blend' with the background well. They look flat, like they'd been shot with long lens, even though they hadn't (not in every shot). Sometimes the effect is so jarring I'd believe those people were shot greenscreen. The compression and lighting might exaggerate this effect (too much fill in some shots?), but I think the main reason is bokeh rendition - this seems to be the case with all new low light-loss gg... They can't compete with more diffusing ggs in terms of image 'mojo' IMO.

Trez I hate disagreeing with people but I disagree with you. What you're commenting on mostly has to do with the lighting choices that were made. The footage with the stedicam is top notch. I'd be curious to hear your complaints on that.

The video you're commenting on isn't even shot with the M2 Encore. It's the old M2 with the cinescreen II.

I hate to agree with people who disagree with me, but must admit you may be right :) I mentioned lighting as one of the potential reasons, actually...
Still - I think the gg diffusion contributes to this look, too. I saw a lot of outdoor, natural light DOF adapter footage that suffered from this problem as well (although not to such extent) - all of them were shot with new (low light loss) ggs...

I'm not going to dissagree with anyone. I'll just agree with someone :2vrolijk_08:

When I first saw the footage, the first thing that popped into my head was, "cool greenscreen footage...I wonder what tracking software they used..."

Someone also mentioned CA which, a lot of times doesn't really distract from the image, but in this case it was especially noticable on the mens' collars which was a bit distracting...also on one vertical post. Maybe it's just lighting that caused some weird casts on those collars? Of course I don't know that the possibility secondary latteral CA can every be totally eliminated without some uber expensive optics.

Overall, I did think the foregound footage was sharp, nice colors and nice camera work.

Hi everyone

Couple of comments - first I really like Kevin's clip - very clean. If I'm not mistaken it is shot with the original M2 Encore + cinescreen II and not the M2 Encore.

On our steadicam shots the 'flatness' it had more to do with our intention, the available light, and lens choice. It was a steadicam shot with no focus puller so we had to keep the DOF fairly deep - the results are exactly what I would expect from those lenses and that situation.

If you watch the 50mm lens portion she is pulled out of the background more than any other shot. Finllly overall it was a flatly lit day. The sun had set (I mean below the horizon), so there was nothing to generate shadows and depth.

On the request for download - you can download the cilp via the vimeo channel (I believe download is in the lower right corner) as a h.264 quicktime. Not great, but definitely better than the recompressed vimeo clips.

Some like it. Some don't. Eh. The context for the shoot is that they are talent ID's. Little :05 and :10 blips showing our on camera news talent. Overall, I am very pleased with how everything came together. Since it was shot with an old sony fx-1 some of what others find objectionable might be the compression there. I don't know. What I do know is that I have shot a lot of film in my day. You know, actual film with actual film cameras. And the results I get with my old RR and new cinescreen fool almost anyone I show it to, since they expect that I am shooting film. Take from it and my footage what you will. I dig the look, workflow, and immediacy of the RR. And with the RR I never get a hair in the gate.
cheers
K
