Moving to LA, maybe next week

Charli

cool little "title"
Hey guys, I'm in need of info to help guide my path. I'll be moving to LA next week, I believe, and I wonder those of you who live there, might give me some info. I'm looking to rent an apartment, but that's not the point, I want to live in a city that is:

Small city in which you can walk to get whatever you need. Having lived in Santa Cruz I was able to walk to the cleaners, eye doctor, restaurants, shops, movies, etc. Of course, I would love to reside in a beach town, just not sure if that's feasible.

What city near LA that's not too far from LA (within 30 minutes) would you choose to live to rent an apartment and that has stuff to do within walking distance?

Thanks for your time, and yes, I quit my job, that job that kept me up at night, in which people rang the night doorbell in the middle of the night - had my fill of it, free at last, free at last, free at last.

Hey Noel, maybe we can hook up? I should be settled in by the end of March.

Cool, Charli. I hear ya. I live in Valley Village (North Hollywood) and it's handy like that. There are some decent neighborhoods over here like you described, though no beach. I'd say stick close to Ventura Blvd in Studio City or Sherman oaks.

oh man you guys have Cool sounding neighborhoods.... we have Chealsea.... Murray Hill..... Canarise..... Bensonhurst (which sounds like a Bratwurst brand)......

i wanna live on "Ventura BLvd"!!!!!!

Hey Charli,
good for you; hope your future is a bright one (going to be smog-filled, by the sound of things! ;-)
How does Huntington Beach sound? Expensive though, for sure. 30 mins is pushing it too.

just came from Lucy's El Adobe on Melrose. Now hitting somme bar called Golden Gopher...yeah, not all the names here are cool.

golden gopher huh...... lol sounds like a rocking place. i hope its a Dive with ex hippies.......

Hey C-

What DC said, but like anywhere, you really gotta check out the specific neighborhood. Can be patchy. All those places he mentioned are great if you look a lil...I live in NoHo. You might wanna check Burbank too. Not as sexy, but another option to consider.

Haha...Golden Gopher is one of the few places that's legit downtown. For a city this size...well, let's just say our downtown nightlife makes me a sad panda.

I live in NoHo as well. The best thing about this area is the inexpensive rent. You're still within minutes of things that go on though. Universal City is about 5 miles from here and Ventura Blvd isn't far either.

Charli -

I'd say Santa Monica hands-down has the best of what LA has to offer - some very walkable neighborhoods, the promenade which is one of the only places in LA where people actually go just to walk around, and the beach. Of course, it's pricey.

I live in Claremont now, 30 miles east of LA, which is home to the Claremont colleges and modelled after a New England college town. Doesn't quite make it, but it tries.

Timur - why the hell would you want to leave NY and come HERE??? Blech! I've been trying for years to get back to NY... it's a HARD adjustment!

I'm moving back to good ole LA next month. Got to check NoHo out. I love Studio City. Time to party with Charli, Timur, DC, Tommy.

I agree, Santa Monica has the lifestyle you're looking for, Charli, but it's very expensive. West L.A., Palms (inexpensive, but still relatively near coast), Venice (less expensive, but more crime), Marina del Rey are less expensive surrogates. Further south, Redondo Beach is actually pretty affordable. Hermosa Beach less so, Manhattan Beach, even less so. Westchester and El Segundo, both just south of Marina del Rey, are also good. Personally, I wouldn't want to live anywhere east of the 405, or north of the 101/134.

grass is greener man...... stupid fence.

I hear you about the damn grass. For shooting locations I'm always jealous of you New Yorkers and your cool looking buildings and bridges. There isn't much like that in SoCal, not too many buildings that are not glass and steel or stucco.

Charli,
I have a friend that lives in NoHo, she seems to like it.

How far is Manhatten beach from LA? Or Hermosa? Santa Cruz is one of the most expensive cities to live in, beat SFrancisco last year in cost. About 60% rent in Santa Cruz, few can afford a home there, so I'm not sure Santa Monica will be more expensive than that.

How much for a 1 bedroom in Santa Monica? Oh, and thanks, for helping guys, your knowledge will guide my path.

Charli
