New Action/Drama trailer. "THE FIRE"

looks awesome dude!

What was is shot on?

and

What did you use to edit it? Only asking because I'm shopping for an editing software.

Thank you, coffee and LloydC, from our whole cast and crew.

Everything on that trailer was shot with the DVX-100A. Everything was 24p EXCEPT the shot of the pistol firing, that was 60i (for the slo-mo) The film already has a good vibe to it and we really haven't begun to seriously do post work yet. I'm editing on a Pinnacle Liquid v6.1 workstation, which I make no excuses for, it is a very good editor with many unbeatable features. I'd recommend it, but with the Avid aquisition, I'd probably wait until the fall to see what's going to happen with the line. Avid may abandon it, and strip off the HDV codec and other features for the current Avid product line.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but I've shot on lots of different cameras, the DVX blows them all away with the image quality and film look. That I would recommend to anyone.

Collink
have you ever used the Canon XL2?
I'm debating between purchasing either the XL2 or the DVX-100A but just can't make the decision! lol

Go with DVX100a!! Trust me. If you want you project to have a high production value look to it, shot in 24p mode. The film look is great! And if you are going to edit on Final Cut Pro, even better. FCP talks wonderfully to the DVX100a. Just my two cents.

coffee, I've triedboth extensively before buying and went with the DVX

I just think the end product is just so much better (mainly the only difference is the Xl2's native 16:9)

picture looks more filmic with the DVX to me thasn the XL2

I have only used the XL-2 once and then it wasn't for a film project, it was event coverage. In the past I used the XL-1s many many times, and it's a good camera but the resulting footage from either Canon is not what the DVX's is. There's that intangible quality to well shot DVX footage that emparts a feeling to the audience. DVX footage has charisma. You could say the camera has - "mojo"? -Collin

DVX ... the one with 'mojo'! hahaha.

Maybe that should be the tag line for the HVX. haha

Ok then if you guys would shed some light on this for me then I'd be a little less stupid! LOL

- I've done some research on the panasonic and its 24p not being true or something along that line. What's the story with that?

Thanks fellas

Quick word of advice, if you want this picked up/looked at by any serious companies or persons, saying "our amazing" movie already means they won't take you seriously.

Trailer seems alright.

FindingMattch: Explain yourself - How can a post on a usersgroup webboard using the words "our amazing movie" automatically preclude us from potential distributors? If the final film is amazing, then there's not an issue. I remember an old quote, "It ain't braggin', if you can do it." If a distributor thinks our film group is "amateur-ish" because of certian words we use to describe our work, and doesn't even give the trailer a look (not this one, the final, narrative trailer) And the film happens to be a gem. That distributor has missed the boat, and potentially a good profit. Their loss. If the final picture turns out as well as we feel the footage we have captured so far will, we don't feel that finding a distributor could possibly be an issue. Hollywood is not engineered to create success, only to exploit and profit from it. If you create an amazing motion picture, everyone will want a piece of the action.

Coffee,
If anyone has claimed the the DVX- isn't a "true" 24p camera it's only because the DV tape transport and DV format does not record unmodified 24p. The Camera is capable of true 24p. The recorder performs the 3/2 pulldown and records 60i to tape. This is done because in the DV format, 60i IS the frame rate. But most NLE's can extract the original 24p footage from the DVX when recorded in 24pA, and even in 24p standard (but in this instance the 3rd frame in a GOP is interpolated). The claim that the DVX is not "True" 24p is untrue, it is 24p, just modified in a lossless way to accomodate the DV format standard for compatability and playback on NTSC monitors.

DVX is 'true 24p', what Collink said...

And the DVX is more then just a camera, I love it like a child, lol... never felt this way about a camera before! It really has the mojo baby... I think it will be a little painful to part with it in order to buy the HVX200...

Regarding the trailer, there are a few cool shots... But as far as why you don't come out and say 'check out my AMAZING new movie!' is because it makes you look a little arrogant and it's just sort of unprofessional... ALSO, no matter how good your flick is, not everyone is going to think it's amazing. You as the filmmaker, I feel, have to let the audience decide that. I wouldn't call it amazing, and I don't think you'd classify Mattch's reaction as 'amazing' either ("looked alright").

A couple things, take what you will from them, in an attempt to be constructive... with indie no budget films where you don't have any names, not even C actors, don't waste time in the trailer telling everyone who they are, that means NOTHING to anyone cause no one knows who these people are. I feel you have to really sell the concept/story/hook of the film, and when you only have a minute or 2 to do that, you don't have time to tell people who is in the movie when no one is going to know who they are, unknowns do not add marketting value to a film.

Also, I felt that there were just alot of shots that were less then intriguing... you've got that rockin music but then you've got... a shot of an empty broken down industrial complex, completely static... This just made me say... 'What?'

I can tell that you got a couple cute girls to be in it, there's some kind of criminal hijinks going on, possibly hitmen, people talk on the phone alot, and most of the characters are very busy trying to look cool. If this is what you are getting across, the trailer should be much shorter and not as repetitive, resist the urge to throw in every single cool shot you feel you have... I feel that you could have a good trailer here if it was much shorter, and there was more build up, let the tension rise, then rock out, and STOP.

Keep us updated, look forward to seeing more.

I was just saying do you think you need to say anything at all? You shouldn't have to if the film speaks for itself. Or at least use a description more...descriptive...than "amazing."

No harm meant by it though.

Just want to clarify that I don't mean any harm either, just trying to give constructive criticism, I try to give people the kind of input that I want to receive on my work, honest opinions.

Now, the constructive criticism I can appreciate, thank you for that. The response Chance gave to the trailer is exactly why I posted the teaser here. We are a different group at Palatia, and we are doing things that other indie filmmakers historically have not, one of those things, especially with our initial awareness effort with this movie, is to shamelessly and unabashedly promote the actors that have given nothing less than top-notch performances. They may not be "name" actors YET, but they will be shortly, and they need to be recognized now for their talent and for their remarkable performances. Your critique of my edit was probably right on, there are things I need to do to the narrative trailer before releasing it. I truly appreciate your specific feedback, I will re-edit with those things and other suggestions in mind.

Collink,

I'm pleased to know that you found my comments constructive. I have made an effort to give honest feedback here lately, and sometimes I feel like perhaps I'm being a little too forthcoming or harsh. Glad to know this is not the case for you.

Best of luck with the project and I look forward to seeing more.

I agree with you that your actors deserve props for all their hard work... I feel the same way about mine... I'm just not sure if that's an effective way to market the flick.

It is cool to see someone else doing an indie action flick, I'm doing action later this year...

Thanks Chance,
Action films are cool, We got so lucky with this one because we just found so many talented persons to help with the project. From actual SWAT team members and trainers to help with police assault sequences, and weapons, to very experienced martial artists to design the fight choreography, keep everyone safe, and generally bring a really neat story to life. It has been a humbling and perfectly collaborative experience. I hope we get that through the screen and out to the audience.
