This is the link to the page where you can see the short we shot with the DVX100 for the MSN Messenger video competition

www.msn.it/videocomunichiamo

There you can find a list of ten spots that were selected to partecipate to the final stage of the competition

Our work's title is "sometimes girlish" (original title was "something girlish" but I guess someone mispelled it) and it's the fourth clip from the left, top row

As for the technicals, all I have to say is that we shot the short the first day we got the camera, and i sincerely cannot remember the settings except that we definetely shot 25p, working tough with pedestal... it was also thanks to you guys' feedbacks that, despite the new camera, i was ready to cope and face the unavoidable shooting's problems: this site really rocks!

The spot is about messenger and the lines on video play a big role to get the juice of the work; here's some sort of translation for 'em

1: I hang out with Luca tonight
2: Did you read Bea's message?
3: Will it end up with the same preliminaries?
4: Yeah, same old ones... pizza and cinema!

5: Same old preliminaries, uh?

Thanks folks for any feedback about the work... I really appreciate 'em

Wow, I really like it - it's definitely got the main-stream commercial feel to it. Most shots were 'money shots' and the editing style was classy without being annoying.

Was this shot with the DVX100 or DVX100A?

It's a shame you don't know the settings you used - the color and black levels are not far off perfect imo.

The only bit that 'scared' me was the webcam - I was getting a bit worried when it started going in-front of her face, and suddenly relieved when you did the zoom-in transition :D

Maybe the web-cam shot before the transition scene shouldn't of been so near to her face? I think because the web-cam kreeps near to her face then cuts to another scene it sort of has the "in the way" feel to early. Maybe it should of stayed on the left side of the shot intially, then to the middle on the transition?

It's a testament to how good an ad is when you think the concept is clever, even if you don't understand the language. I thought the spot was terrific -- really well produced. The split screen thing is really popular right now, and you used it to good effect here. Great job!

Oh and I loved the shot with the webcam very nice...I would have to disagree with grexeo -The webcam shot was perfect..and you were the right distance away from her face...

Re: New 60" short for MSN video competition

I think grexeo was talking about the shot prior to the transition throught the webcam. I agree that it could have been a little further out from the center. nit picking, I know...

I thought the scene with the typed message on the bottom, while we see it simultaneously on the computer in the upper 2/3 of the screen was creative. This occurs at the 26 second mark if my description is lacking.

Re: New 60" short for MSN video competition

Thanks for the comments guys... I appreciate

As for the questions... our camera is a brand-new DVX100-A with a century optics (vocas) matte box for the additional filters (that weren't available yet by the time of the shootings)
I know that forgetting the settings doesn't sound professional, but believe me.. we shot everything (the whole 5 locations) in 28 hours, from 9p.m on friday till 1am on sunday... such a rush was determined by the delivery delay of the camera and the strict deadline... it then took me almost a week to edit the work and convert it to a not-larger-than-10mb mpg file.
It was a pain in the a*s to find out that after 7 days of very tough work the deadline had been postponed to may 27th (originally it was april 9th)... I haven't done a lot to change it then, I just added a few details but mostly jut for my fun.

this is pretty much it, except that all the actresses are employees in the office next door and that were so kind to accept the really stressful shooting conditions

thanks again for the comments

p.s.: I agree as for the web-cam thing... unfortunately most of the material we shot at night was very bad (I still don't like how i set up the lights) and we ended up using just the few clips that weren't gross, but I agree, I could have managed that scene much better
