hello 5DMK2 users, reserved my 5DMK2 today, picking it up tomorrow evening!

as i wasn't expecting to make my purchase so soon my funds are restricted to buying the body only.

coming from the GH1 world with the micro 4/3 sensor i have a set of nFD prime lenses & an FD to EOS adapter.

anyone use FD lenses on the 5DMK2? i understand its not ideal (already own the nFD 50mm f1.2L) but when i have funds it is getting replaced with the EF version

any tips or advice would be very welcome.

especially when it comes to the firmware updates & the technicolor cinestyle profile???

i would like to shoot in 25fps (pal world)

PS: it will be exciting to see how the MK2 compares to the GH13  FOV & DOF (no more silly crop)

I have the 5d mk and the gh13. I also have fd lenses. With the fd to ef Bower adapter I lose about a stop of light and have to stop down to at least f2.8 to get a decent image otherwise the image has a dream like effect. The fd lenses add about a 1.3 crop to the 5d because of the glass element in the adapter. In my opinion the gh13 has more detail than the 5d but the 5d produces a more pleasing image

welcome to the dark side of the force terra1. of course you should get the cinestyle on it, it's a new standard (although that's not the same thing as you always gonna use it).

canon FD lenses needs an adapter with a glass element in it.

the thing you need to remember is that these old wonderful lenses that was (is) amazing on a m43 sensor, is maybe at best decent on a fullframe camera. Now of course in video on the canons we're not even getting real 1080p & GH1 is far superior resolution, BUT we're still getting a video that orginates from that huge 35mm vistavision sensor... So, although the real "dealbreaker" in glass quality is for the photographer, it does have a play in video aswell.

the sensor is double the size, and some of the glass possibly half as good. and again since the video out of the camera is actually quite poor, that even further pushes the need for good sharp FF glass. but as always, whatever floats your boat

i received a FD lens to EOS body adapter with an FD lens 6 months ago so will give it a try.

the footage from the 5D is more appealing to me next to GH1 footage, i much rather look & feel over maximum resolution.
also losing some video quality & functions to gain photographic ones is an even trade for me  plus low light, DOF, FOV always nagged me about the m4/3 sensor.
yeah with the full frame sensor i kinda felt old FD lenses were cheating it a little lol.

as i wasn't expecting to pick up a 5D body so soon i'd not set aside cash for a nice 1st lens, got my eye on the EF 50mm f1.2L :oP

i also gonna hold onto my little GH13 :o)

i presume when i first power on the 5D is will be running an early firmware, do i have to update every firmware release in order up until now??? or just the latest release?

just the latest. the older ones are contained in the latest release.

thanks man, as id expected just thought id make sure
just got back with the 5D 30 mins ago, battery blinking orange every second... come ooooon!!!

convert FD to EOS... bit messy id think, plus as i now own a good stills camera i really would like auto focus lenses, id feel as if i was cheating the 5D body by keeping FD lenses on it, a king needs a crown

oooo  first testing with the MK2

loaded up the cinestyle & marvel cine profiles & raring to go!

arrrgh FD's! very soft when faster than f2.8, initial shots look promising, figured my way around the menus and feel ok getting to stuff now, way different from the GH1 menu.

need to get a EF

Welcome to the 5D2. I also tried the GH1 and GH13 hack and quickly sold it. GH1/GH13 in low light is nasty compared to the 5D2!
