New 5DII firmware 2.03 in the wild

it's in the wild.

Who wants to dump it and do a prerelease!

Personally I call this the Willy Wonka Effect!

What better way to stimulate sluggish ass sales of an 18 month old camera?

Release some into the wild with a COVETED GOLDEN TICKET OF FIRMWAREY GOODNESS!

I couldn't see the Pictures attached.

I couldn't see the Pictures attached.

So I figured I'd save the rest of you the trouble of joining another forum just to see the JPEG's posted about the firmware.
This from a guy who supposedly bought a new 5DM2 with the firmware already installed. I'm assuming its the real deal.

Looking forward to the 16th to get mine.

Nice find. Still would love to know if there is full HD monitoring via HDMI while recording. Probably not since Canon didn't announce it...but I've got my fingers crossed.

What a bummer. The one thing I want the most is monitoring output that isn't SD that doesn't shut off the camera LCD. Oh well.

.

That's interesting that his picture shows an RGB histogram and not a typical luminance histogram. Maybe you have an option of what to display. I know it's a still camera, but it would've made a lot more sense for Canon to have made it a waveform display.

I know it would be nice to have full HD out on the HDMI, but that's not firmware but hardware.
I wonder ....... is Canon releasing this to extend the product life of the 5DII, or ..... are we seeing the first iteration of the firmware for the 5DIII?

The Canon press release clearly says: A new histogram display for shooting movies in manual exposure, shutter-priority (Tv) and aperture-priority (Av) have been added ... but unfortunately the images above leave some doubts because with the current (old) firmware there already is a histogram display in "Exposure simulation mode" (although not RGB). The big question for me is is this histogram now available in "Movie display mode" since this is the only mode that allows full manual control. Canon seems to say so.

What does this mean for the 5DII?

What does this mean for the 5DII?

So. Canon have released not just a 1.x to 1.y upgrade, but a whole new 2.x firmware.
Also the prices for the 5DII have been dropping here, even with the falling Pound, as happened before the 5DII came out.
So by the Auguries a 5DII replacement should be just over the horizon, but Canon have released a 2.0.x firmware upgrade.
Question, are Canon beta testing (Without telling us) the firmware for the 5DIII or whatever, or, and this has only just occurred to me, that Canon may be having trouble developing some aspects of the 5DIII (Or whatever), so are releasing this firmware to extend the product life of the 5DII? :Drogar-Thinking(DBG

Or else . . . . Meh!

Will the firmware update to the sampling frequency improve the audio quality at all? Or is it just on paper?

Any improvement to audio quality will probably be marginal given all the other compromises. Theoretically 48 kHz will give a slightly wider bandwidth, but the main benefit is that you won't have to sample-rate convert when going to disk.

You won't perceive the difference between 48kHz and 44.1kHz - depending on your age even the very best pair of ears out there will not be able to hear much higher than 20kHz.

Without getting too technical and bringing in the whole Nyquist frequency thing - a 44.1kHz sample rate can resolve 20.05kHz - there are arguments about aliasing and how higher frequencies although not heard will effect the audible range . . . . . but at the end of the day . . . . no, it will not sound of a higher quality.

32kHz to 44.1kHz you might (depending on the content) hear a qualitative improvement, but 44.1kHz to 48kHz . . no.

What it will do is make the audio side of the 5D movie a little more 'industry standard' . . . . and steal a tiny bit of quality from the video side.

Forgive my ignorance, but with the manual audio control will folks now be ditching their Zoom H4n's?

Nope, the H4n will be essential when I want to boom with a couple of Lavs and keep all the channels separate for mixing in post. But for a lot of stuff the juicedlink will do nicely.

Just use ML, that's proven reliable for months and months and months.
its hard when you have 8 CF cards, and have to make sure every single one has it on it, and if my assistant doesnt reload it on one of hte cards after she downloads and formats, then im screwed. Plus i dont have the time to wait for it to load. we have a 5 hour Event to shoot that is literally non stop on the 13th. its gonna be rough!
