New 5D MarkIII, is this what we've been waiting for?

As a 7D owner, I'll probably save my pennies for one and no doubt purchase just before the next generation 7D launches:( but tend to agree with Jonathan Palfrey, 'Faster frame rates is the thing I really want to see in new cameras, how long until we see a 720p/120fps camera?'

Like everyone else am also waiting for an objective and accurate side by side footage comparison with the 5D2, the C300 AND the new Nikon(s) BEFORE I make any further purchasing decisions. Anyone know of a new Zacuto shootout in the works that will include the 5D3?

No clean HDMI out, no crop modes, more expensive than the D800. Looks to be a let down to me.

Still waiting to see how the low light stacks up, maybe that can save it.

Here's what Philip Bloom has on his Blog about the HDMI output.

"What is key for me and I hope to clear this up soon is the ability to get a clean 8 bit 422 uncompressed HDMI signal for using external recorders. EDIT: Am told it’s only 720p out…BOO HISS!"

I'd wait for some hand-on side by side tests, but it's not looking good against the D800 - do we know for a fact that all-I is 8-bit 4:2:0?

Lets wait and see the sensor tech.. if it's gone the c300 route then we have ourselves a winner.. (real 1080p resolution)

There is potential for a crop mode on the 5Dmk3, from one of the things I saw. Although, they are not really letting anyone know about it, so maybe they won't have it.

From the bike video "RAD BALL", I can't see that the new 5D is much, or any sharper than "Joy Ride", Nikon's promo video for the D800.

look at the eyelashes in this shot (the others are at higher ISO ratings, so hard to compare for detail):

I'm surprised by the lack of enthusiasm for a (virtually) aliasing-free 5D with an improved h.264 codec. That's the most important thing for me. I would have liked a swing out lcd too..

From the samples I've seen, I like it (although I would have to see the raw file to really judge it).

For me the canon 5d mk2 is a very good camera but has 3 serious issues

1. Moire
2. Aliasing
3. Lack of detail especially on wide shots

The 5d mk3 is a great camera because it solves the above problems

if you guys want a video camera with video camera features get a C300/FS100/RED Scarlet, this is a still camera first and video second. lol

Rates as better than expected for me. Didn't expect clean HDMI out, crop modes, 1080p60, swing-out LCD or 4K (?!), so not fazed by absence of these.

Pleasantly surprised by aliasing improvements, and annoyed that I'd just dropped $500 (or whatever) on VAF-5D filter. (Probably should keep it new in box and eBay it off; any takers?) Feeling happy I didn't buy another 7D body (was considering). Pleasantly surprised by LCD improvements (will make it easier to use loupe; but not sure by how much LCD is improved).

Didn't expect improvements to lowlight or ISO or codec (or bit rate?). Very happy about these, and these will probably in the end make me upgrade. Curious about whether that lowlight improvement is just in stills mode and what it actually means (have heard conflicting reports). Also, no one seems to know if the codec changes are going to be a big deal or not, since h.264 will still be h.264, and I've never read anyone talking about difference in storage -- does 12 minutes still = 4GB? Very much doubt it.

Too invested in Canon glass to really consider D800, and probably prefer Canon glass anyway.

Not looking to upgrade till prices have settled down and a few second-hand ones start appearing.

Edit: I lied, and have now pre-ordered. /sigh...

My guess is that the size limit has only to do with the silly euro law saying anything over 30 min is a 'video camera.' 91mbps is going to each through 4 gigs a lot faster than 12 min!

The 5D will just create new files after one hits 4gb. Does anyone know if magic lantern will be able to get around the 30 minute limit?

'The question is, does anyone know if ML will be able to even get inside the head of this new beast.

New user here - and a bit of a video newbie - so forgive me for jumping in on this one...

When I Cosimo's post, my first thought was that the 5D MKIII appears to be more like a full-frame 7D than an updated 5D MKII (oversimplifying for sure). My fear is that just as ML hasn't been able to crack the 7D, the 5D MKIII will be just as impenetrable.

We'll see...

An articulating LCD screen is never going to appear on a rugged weatherproofed professional DSLR. It will get snapped off or the hinge will let in water or similar.
