New 5D Firmware pulled back by Canon becauseof malfunction

Dark Side of the Camera
Recently we have discovered a malfunction that occurs with Firmware Version 2.0.3, in which the manual recording levels for C1/C2/C3 are changed and the camera becomes unable to record audio if the power is turned off (or if Auto power off takes effect) after registering "Sound Recording: Manual" in the camera user settings.
We apologize very sincerely for the inconvenience, but we are going to stop making this firmware available for download. For customers who have already updated to the new firmware, when using the camera with the mode dial set to C1/C2/C3, please either set the sound recording settings to Auto.
We are currently preparing firmware that will correct this malfunction. As soon as those preparations have been completed, we will let you know on this Web site. In the meantime, we apologize for the inconvenience this represents, but please wait until the fixed firmware is ready.

And I thought it took so long because of diligent testing, to make sure, that everything works in the first place. :violin:

It took me all of about 2 minutes to figure it out on location last week. I hit record in C1 mode, loaded the file onto my mac and was like "hmm no sound". I used an EX1 as a field recorder and when I got home that night I worked out that M mode was ok and C mode was a bit quiet.

I've been filming with 2.0.3 for a week now and haven't found any other bugs, the C mode audio bug isn't that big an issue provided everybody knows about it.

Pffft....hogwash (not at anyone here...but Canon). All this hype of a 24p firmware to help drive up new camera sales. Watch, by the time they "get it right" there will be an announcement for a new camera with those features.

What idiots... they could have make this camera so much better... so it takes them one (or two) years to release this (and it could and should) have been so much better, and in the end it doesn't even work and any 12 years old who would test it for more than 5 minutes would have known this....

So now my new never used camera has a bug in it. Great.

well if it's never used maybe you're not into custom modes yet so go into manual mode and shoot away while they amend the faulty release. the benefits are huge already.
hopefully it might not be as long to wait for a corrected firmware this time as the corporate ladder effect will urge tech to shut the bad mouthing with a functional 2.0.x...

It is so much better and there's nothing about the bug that makes it unusable. A lot of people don't even use the C mode, I have been but I can live without it.

I've been waiting to upgrade till I hear it's fully working. I know my 5D works now and how it works. I can wait till they get it fixed.

Oh and by the way Canon, ADD HD MONITORING!

just dont use C modes... Who uses C mode? what does it do for you that M doesn't? people?

I dont think i've ever even switched my cam to anythign but M or "Green Box Auto" for my mom...

Already asked... They cant. its not in the horsepower of the on board hard ware to do so reliably. Sure magic lantern is close, but its apparently pushing the limits of what it can do.... dont expect it from canon....

Dang...makes me want to switch to the 1D MkIV for shooting our feature.

I would.... The 1DmkIV is a better suited camera for cinema work in that sense anyway. 1080i output while recording is crucial for long form projects.

Some people's attitudes are puzzling. They've wanted this camera so desparately to have 24p and manual audio control. Now they have it and F@# Canon for not making it available in the custom mode.

We have manual control over aperture, shutter, ISO, sound and a selection of frame rates. Be grateful for god's sake and stop looking a gift horse in the mouth. This camera now has everything people have been asking for. I probably won't even download the "custom mode" fix. I've never used custom mode even as a still photographer.

I've never used custom mode even as a still photographer.

Then you've never realized the potential of that feature.. say you're taking pictures of subjects around you, a group of subjects in one lighting condition and another group in another lighting condition and you'd have have go back n' forth between these groups.. Having a custom settings save the proper configuration for each lighting condition allows you to switch between several presets, as opposed to dialing in the combination of ISO, Shutter, and aperture for each picture. Obviously this feature is mostly helpful for event and documentary photographers.

Get it?

No, I don't. :-) ...and a refuse to. :-)

I was shooting a Canon F1 for years. Never had it. Never wished I had then.

Great. I've been out of town for several months and never got to download the upgrade.
Did anyone save it?

I have it and can email it to you if you want. PM me your email addy and I'll send it tonight.

PS. It's the Mac version so can't help you if you need the PC version.
