New 5D firmware pre-announced for Mid-March

presumably, the same bitrate will be applied to the 24frames, as was the 30 frames.... :) less compression is nice, as will be less heat, and less noise as a by product of a slower cycle rate.

As far as 60P is concerned.... i imagine its tough to process 21.1 megapixels @ 60P pixel bining or not....

So, even with the upgrade, the 5D MkII will have no over-crank, yet the $800 Rebel 550 does?

Not complaining (I don't own a 5D), but it just seems kinda dumb. Maybe there's a good reason for this?

Yeah there's a good reason for it, Canon wants 5D users to spend another $800 for overcranking which is kinda tempting to have as a B cam for not a lot of coin.

Thanks Canon for releasing the update 3 days after my next film shoot. I'm gonna call and hassle them to give it to me, they've been giving it to pro sports photographers!

20% less compression will be very nice.

Never say never Kholi.

This makes is harder to decide which b-camera to get. 5D MKII seams tempting with 25p and audio levels under control... let's hope for a 7D similar FM update.

I have my first shoot on the 5D scheduled for March 12-14th. AHHHH

Edit: Any chance that mid-March means the 11th?

Yay for the release, seems it's basically 25p + Magic Lantern so well done to Tramm for doing the heavy lifting heh!

I might be being sent to SXSW to film loads of bands, fingers crossed it'll be out before then! Might have to bug them for it myself...

"Glad I never sold..." -- yeah, I was worried squig might have sold his camera for a 7D one day before the firmware announcement!

Allllright, time to let the geek out of his cage and put him back to work on the 5D MKII ANDROMEDA experiment. I'm sorry Barry but "I HAVE A DREAM AND WE SHALL GET TO THE PROMISED LAND!!" WOW, this camera just gets better and better, and I just bought this thing. Can't imagine what is been like for you guys who bought this way back when. OK, so now can I sell my M2e?

EDIT: Ok so I went down stairs this morning and found the geeks cage open and the geek gone. So who let the geek out?

:) less compression is nice,
Doesn't really work that way though. If it was an intraframe codec, you'd be exactly right, but because it's interframe, it doesn't really make as much a difference as you'd expect it to. Yes there are fewer frames, meaning there should be less to compress, but because the frames are updated less frequently it means there will be more change between frames, making each frame harder to compress. It probably results in a wash, but for stuff like interviews I do believe that yes, when very little changes between frames, you will see a net increase in video quality.

as will be less heat, and less noise as a by product of a slower cycle rate.
Those should both be true.

What this does do is, enable me to use the 5DmkII in ORDINARY shooting circumstances where im just handing over footage. 29.97, 23.98, 25P. SPECTACULAR. i can shoot for europe, US, Internet and TV all in one camera... HVX200 cant even do that... this is TRULY exciting News!

It's like deflowering the 18 year old virgin that's been saying no for 8 months.

I spoke to a mate yesterday who has a mate who is in the loop at Canon and it appears that the rumours of a future DSLR with a much improved video spec are true. No details yet but it sounds like it will be a high end model so I'm speculating it's the 1DsMKIV or perhaps the 5DMKIII. I'm trying to get some more info.

Good point !

This is fantastic news. Thanks to all who helped convince Canon to be the innovator. I'm proud to be a life long Canon owner. Now I await the update...

compression

compression

An article about how a codec works would be welcome. There's a lot of lack of information over the boards on the subject matters.

Less compression will shine on static shots with less subjects subject to change into the framing including the right balance of shallow DOF (already mentioned by Barry, besides, you're fair right Timur).

E. :-)

Hey guys, great news! But I'm late to the 5d party. I have been using the 7d. Will the 5d have a similar resolution to the 7d on an external monitor with HDMI or will it still have the low res 480p output via HDMI?

Thanks
