New 4k alternate to fs700 + external recorder

The 7Q misses a tentative release date so you're now looking into a freshly announced (also unreleased) camera with a fixed lens and tiny sensor? Have fun!

It's 1/2inch sensor, great for doco and run and gun but it misses the one big plus of the EX1. It doesn't appear to be a 3 chip camera, that 4K is bayered. So ironically the EX1 probably has the same real resolving resolution, or rather the 4K isn't quite a leap forward as it first might look.

cheers

It's a 1/2" sensor (1/2.3" to be precise) - but only the centre part is used. In area terms, it's more accurate to think of it as a 1/3" sensor. As said elsewhere, I suspect the reason is to enable Sony to make quite clever use of existing hardware.

Yes, the single chip element is significant - in sensitivity it means it will be about a stop down on what would be expected from three comparable chips. But single chip seems to be necessary for 4k.

As far as resolving power, then normal deBayering is generally reckoned to yield luminance resolution about 80% of the chip dimensions - so for 3840 horizontally, I'd expect it to resolve about 3000-3100 - considerably more than an EX1. (Move to cinema 4k - 4096 - and that figure goes up to more like 3300.)

In fact, 4096x2160 Bayer is exactly the same as used in many high end 4k cameras, so in terms of resolution it would be expected to give exactly the same results as (say) an F5! And with a fair wind it may..... the downsides are that due to the small chip size diffraction will severely limit usable aperture range, and low light performance won't be as good. In other words, a similar state of affairs to comparing a small pocket camera with an upmarket DSLR. In good light you may find it difficult to tell them apart - a different story when the light fades! :)

That's the issue with the small chips, not absolute quality in good lighting. But think how many you could get for the price of a single F5 kit with lens, v/f etc...... :)
