New 35mm adapter

yea flip isn't too much of an issue, I may just use a mirror, and when I get my laptop I'll just use dvrack to flip it. no biggie. I can't wait to see the footage of the standard and pro :P

Same here :)

New pieces arrived today! SoooOOooo close, and yet the f-mount has a release issue so it needs improvement. Everything else is PERFECT -- weight and dimensions are spot on and it feels like a tank in hand.

I've already sent the revision notes to the machinist and, given that the other components are perfect, and just the f-mount release mechanism needs changing, I hope to have the turn-around time on this final revision be shorter than the others.

Meanwhile, I'm off to the island today, picking up parts and components to streamline production of the Pro glass, so expect more stills and footage from the Pro within a week-to-ten days.

That looks cool, bro. Can't wait for the footage. Are you planning make Canon FD mounts too? I truly hope so. I have a bunch of very good FD lenses.

I'm not making any promises at this point but I will look into new mounts in time. The first short run of 100 adapters will be strictly Nikon f-mount, though.

Do you know the proper flange distance for Canon's lenses?

Hum, so it'll probably take a long time for the FDs to come along, right? If they come along at all... :-(

Just had an "AHA!" moment -- I might be able to get FDs done. Let me talk to my guy and I'll get back to you and let you know. The per unit price might go up a little considering that I'd have to invest more to cover design costs, but hopefully not by much.

Just had two other breakthroughs today, and will let you know as the time comes.

I'm actually a little relieved that the final run will take five weeks -- it gives me a little more time to perfect the quality of the components I'm building here. The final product will be something I'm very proud of, and like many of you, I'm excited at the thought of actually putting it to use!

Nikon "Nikkor" f-mount f/1.4 50mm... you should be able to get them for around $50-75. Beyond this, anything Nikon f-mount will work, but outside of 50mm finding something close to f/1.4 will get costly. Most zooms, for instance, are around f/2.8 to start.

The only worry with buying lenses without seeing them firsthand, well other than scratches, is how smoothly the focus ring turns. I'm trying to make the mount as tight as possible to minimize any "jiggle" when turning the focus or exposure rings, but even Nikon made mounts exhibit a little play.

wait, is this the standard or the pro? I'm guessing the standard? It has a release issue but you can still shoot with it right? Mind if we get a lil peek at some footage? sorry im just an eager beaver. thanks

The machine work is looking good..utilitarian...but good! Anodize it black, add some purposeless stainless studs and the posers will love it to ;)

Jim, I'm hoping you'll post some full res stuff and perhaps an ISO 12233 chart with and without the adapter...more to indicate distortion (if any) and hotspotting. It's a brave thing to do, but being that no one else will do it, perhaps you can be the first! There are a few charts of the Letus, and the M2 here. from a PD150.

To clarify a point from above: yes, I'm now thinking of doing a three-tiered product system -- Go35Standard for $209; Go35Pro for between $500 and $600 which will be a near grainless static DV only solution; Go35HD which will go for between $650 and $750, and will require a moving mechanism and have a charge indicator for the batteries.

hehehe prices are rising...
just stay under the g35, please...

No worries, there. I'm not aiming at the same price league at all. When I mentioned prices rising, I'm talking in the neighborhood of $30-50, only for the FD mount (since it's a new and additionally costly development) not $100's...

Ultimately, I'd like the Go35 HD to be at most 65% the cost of a G35; the Go35 Pro half or less. Their product is great and I think they have a reasonable asking price, but I, like many of you, cannot afford it. I'm trying to put out as great a quality product as I can, while getting it into the hands of the smaller, independent, budget guys. I think their aim is at a decidedly "pro" market and from the looks of their device, they deserve it.

Design notes:

I'm trying to make it so that the tubing containing the GG can be standard across all models, and therefore purchased separate of the two mounts. That way you can buy one adapter with multiple mounts, or buy a Go35 Standard now, and when your budget allows, upgrade to a Go35 Pro at a reduced price later.

On that note, this is exactly what I'm pushing for the my machinist and the good news is, yes, he says FD mounts are available. Now it's just a matter of tackling the above design issue. It's all about maintaining proper flange length across different mounts with a GG at a fixed position. Sounds easier than it is.

Don't worry about the utilitarian look too much. Though this product will ultimately be one of function over form, it will have a black matte anodized finish. Also, I'm working on a logo -- apparently it can be printed on the tubing in the final run.

No more footage just yet. Honestly, I can take the Go35 Standard prototype out now and shoot anytime I want, but I want to wait until I have the Pro glass up to par and shoot some side-by-sides. Also, I want to use a DVX for testing and just haven't had the time to set that up. Remember, this project is all unpaid time and energy, with all dev costs coming straight out of my pocket. I have to juggle the Go35 with a relationship with my girlfriend, time for the cat, my part-time job, as well as freelance web and video gigs.

Who knows, maybe someday I'll even make a movie

Personally, I would prefer that the logo be very small and professional looking -- looks more professional that way. Great work! Can't wait to see (and hopefully purchase) the final product.
