New 35mm adapter

Jim I also saw that footage some time ago. Your bokeh looks hazy which suggests your wax layer is too thin?

That's not wax, but... I don't know what to say... I'm kind of confused by what you mean. The bokeh is supposed to look hazy, no?

As a related aside, it looks like I've got to reluctantly retract my entrance into the shootout -- that's a deadline I can make but I don't have a spare, fast F-mount lens to part with for the duration of the tests.

If someone here has a spare f/1.4 lens they'd "donate" for the duration of the tests, that would be great, and I could enter. But otherwise, if not, I'll just go about posting a bunch of footage on my site once it's up and running...

It looks nice. Could you post some more footage, with better resolution. I would also like to see some interior and low light footage. I have a FX1. Would your adapter work with it? Do you have any footage? I would be very interested in trying it out...too bad I live in the other side of the ocean. Oh, by the way, do you think the image is sharpper than the Letus35A (with a Canon FD mount), for instance? I have one of those and I have a lot of problem with light loss, lack of shapness and grain. To which adapters' quality would you compare it to?

OK, well, let me state that I'm now looking at working on developing two Go35's -- the Go35, and the Go35 Pro.

The Go35 will cost $209 and will be similar to the My35 in performance, light loss and grain -- perhaps a little better in all respects, but my gut instincts tell me the Letus, since it has a moving GG, will look slightly better. The Go35 will sell on its simplicity, small size, low cost, and static nature. The quality of the image will look great when viewed on an NTSC source, but as a shooter, you would have to make the call -- and it would be a personal one -- as to whether you accept the look for, e.g. projection. As someone said of the My35, this adapter will be a good choice for anyone looking to add to their shooting arsenal without breaking the bank.

The Go35 Pro will cost in the neighborhood of $500-550 and will have a lot of the "holy grail" features sought after by many here (myself included) -- no grain, no light-loss (or extremely mild light loss at worst), and will be static. It will not flip the image (yet. someday maybe.) But it will come in at below half a certain highly anticipated adapter that promises similar features :D

As for more footage -- give me two weeks and I will have a lot to show for all my talk here. I'm just waiting on a lot of shipments on specialized parts and tools, and will be out of town this weekend.

You can bet I will be doing a ton of shooting with the pieces once they're assembled, but just understand that, while I have enough parts here to put "something" together that would resemble the final product, I want to use the exact same parts I will eventually be selling in order to be certain no issues arise when a paying customer is shooting with them. I've gotten a lot of encouraging, kind PM's here and I thank you all for your enthusiasm -- but I just want to ask you for your patience because I want this done right, not just done.

Will it work with the FX1? In theory, yes. Are you in the NYC area? Ergh, no... you said so. Anyway, I made this offer to someone else via PM and it stands for anyone here -- when these are produced in sufficient number, I will send a test unit to people who have a given camera for a siginificant portion of the final cost of the adapter (at least 1/2 - maybe a little more). This will be refundable. You'll get the unit to play with on your cam and let me know how it performs. If it works, great, send me the rest of the money and keep shooting. If not, ship the unit back and I'll refund you the deposit + cost of return shipping.

That's it for the moment.

Oh, and yeah, I understand what bokeh is, I just don't understand the distinction between "badly hazy" bokeh and "goodly hazy" bokeh, and how either relate to the footage I've shown. Are you saying the bokeh shown in my footage is "Poor" or "Neutral"?

Sounds good. Thanks for the quick repply. I will wait for the footage of the Go35 Pro. Too bad I didn't know about this before. I was in NY about a month ago. Oh, by the way, is there some mailling list I can join to keep my self informed?

Good v Bad Bokeh

Good v Bad Bokeh

Yeah sorry it wasn't wax, my mistake - your 3 micron AlOx GG isn't diffusing sufficiently.

What I'm referreing to is based on my own experiences experimenting with static adapters. If your GG is too transmissive the aerial image creates a hazy glow on out of focus areas. This is what happens if you use a single Optosigma 1500 grit GG, your bokeh becomes too hazy. It also increases the DOF. It annoyed me enough to keep looking for a better solution, which at the moment is using 2 1500 GGs facing each other. This diffuses the light more and gets rid of the hazy glow effect on the bokeh. The wax glass I made also solved the hazy bokeh but I wasn't able to make one that didn't have horrendous grain and I tried 1, 2, 3 and 4 layers of foil thickness, 4 different micro waxes, and one of them was the identical wax to Matthew Waukhonen, but I wasn't able to get the results he is getting (with the wax glass he made not his G35 prototype).

A sufficiently diffusing GG would have to be less than 1500 grit, but then you start to get too much grain for static. Anyway that is all based on my own experimenting and looking at your demo it has the same hazy glow on the bokeh as I was getting with a single 1500 grit GG.

Assuming you solve that little problem, would you be willing to sell the Go35 GG on its own? There's probably a lot of people out there who would be interested in just the GG to plug into their own adapters.

Cheers

I have a VX2000.

Any discount if I sign up as a tester?

And, I second the question about a mailing list.

So far, this adapter has me the most interested out of all the 'budget' adapters.

God Bless!

Good luck with the rig. Anxious to see the pro version's performance.

I hope it is clean and sharp. Cause 5 bills is better than 13.

peace.

I'm not up on creating a mailing list at the moment. I did one years back for a film discussion group called "Persistence of Vision" on Yahoo... if I have the time I'll look into it.

Just got a response back from a parts supplier -- should be getting some samples within a week... then the real fun begins.

Hey bklynDV,
Im in brooklyn and would like to shoot tests for you if you like. Im downtown near B.A.M. and I am looking to get an adapter for the DVX. It would be cool to check this out.
Thanks.

Sounds great. Shoot me an email at "info at ideaspora dot net" and I will stay in touch with you. The samples, I'm now told, will be guaranteed here by the "end of the month" -- hopefully a little sooner. Once I get them paired with the DVX, I'll then order the first run off and begin selling them. So, hopefully second week in February they will begin shipping, with tests and grabs up slightly before.

looks great and such a low price... there is no grain what so ever.. how did you get the price so low???
before i saw this i was planning on investing my money into a g35 (costing 1400)
or the micro35(costing 1000) and you have a great one for less than 300

Try to get some FX1 footage too. I'm looking forward to check out the results of your PRO version with the FX1.

You guys might want to re-read the thread... there's going to be the cheap one, and then the good one.
