New 35mm adapter

Petri, its a littel different than that, Ive used 3 different completely different adapters Letus ( vibrating GG), GO35 (static) and SGpro (spinning Glass) they all behave the same way. The GG needs to be over lit. its not a function of the adapter, its a neccesity to get enough light ot the Lenses of the DVX.

You are correct in saying the GG should be gettting enough light, but its perfectly fine to use the apeture of the DVX to control exposure. infact its better because, you can get EXACT exposure, and the DOF increases on the DVX optics on the GG, so the GG itself actually falls into better focus and you lose less resolution. You should stop down the DVX as much as you can to retain sharpness. just so long as your still gettting propper exposure. Abundant light is the Key. Over expose the GG then reduce the over brightness of the GG image with the Iris of the DVX.

Timur, it’s perfectly true, adapters need more light, that’s a fact. I’ve built spinning and vibrating models myself, so I have an idea. However, some adapter models/brands do show less grain than others and do not need as much light than others. The brighter ones just need better light reduction in bright, sunny conditions.

Yes, you can use the camcorder iris, but it is not necessarily better. That’s where I am not following you. I’m not an expert in optics, but my understanding is that even camcorder stock lenses have a sweet spot, where they give a better image, and that’s away from the extreme aperture settings. Even without an adapter, a lot of folks use ND filters in bright daylight (instead of stopping down the camcorder) because it produces a better image. I’d rather be at F/8 than F/11 or F/14.

With ND filters, you can still have the exact exposure. It’s just that it will be with the camcorder at F/5.6 or F/8 instead of F/11 or F/14 (for a given 35mm lens iris setting).

Cheers

Petri, i think were just saying the same thing. With different words.

Jim, not sure gonna find out. will call.

I doubt he will sell any of these before next month.

What I am waiting is footage shot with the new achromat. Let's hope this will be the final one.

I hope I would get my Go35 before we start shooting a music video in July.

You're right on both counts. The new achromat went into dev last week, and from both a technical and financial viewpoint it has to be the last obstacle -- I'm tapped out, and the engineers assure me that it meets less than .05% distortion requirements for over 95% of the diameter. The outer diameter is such that the distortion falls outside the dimensions of a full 36x24mm frame.

Otherwise, given that it is a custom achromat designed completely new from the ground up to meet the requirements of the Go35, the lead time has to be expanded unfortunately. Typically, if you needed say, 30 achromats mounted in a threaded cell, you'd just order a stock component and have the cell machined. This runs you 5-6 weeks. With this achromat, the lens itself has to go into custom dev and manufacture before being mounted, so the time expands to 6-8 weeks. Three weeks ago I was going to give the engineers a thumbs up to have the achromats manufactured, but in a "measure twice, cut once" fashion I did a last few rounds of tests. The evidence, to my mind, was that if I wanted the best product I could put out, I needed to re-adjust my expectations and have a wholly new lens designed -- despite whatever egg I wear on my face now.

The clock is ticking (finally) but I'm writing this knowing that for some of you the persistent delays are a turn-off. I completely understand your POV, and am doing everything I can to help out.

If some of you were thinking of holding off on productions until you could purchase a Go35 product, and the new delay kills your schedule, email me at info@go-35.com -- I have a few tricks up my sleeve that will accomodate a small batch of people who would like to get one of the beta units into their hands and play around. The quality of these units won't be 100% the final product, but it won't be far off. I will need to charge for them as I need to cover my material costs -- and then allow for upgrades to the final product.

To belabor a point, I do feel terrible about the delay -- and I have to thank each and every one of you who have been considerate, patient and even cheered me on throughout the process.

Thanks,

- jim

Jim, if anyone understands what you're going through...it has to be me :-) It's frustrating as hell. If you plan on obstacles (and they'll be a few), and figure how to deal with them without getting an ulcer, you'll be just fine.

Hey Jim,
What's up? Now you know how frustrated I was. I hope there's no hard feelings between us, form the other day?

Good luck!

Dont sweat the delays - video has been around a long time without affordable 35mm adapters :) we can wait a bit longer

im just glad your informing us (incredibly small) i cant say the same for cinemek (/incredibly small)

Jim - just keep up the good work. Things take time - and building stuff from the ground up - like you're doing - just takes time. And a lot of it :-)

Hopfully I'll be able to afford one of your adaptors once they're ready to ship.

All the best!

Thanks and... no hard feelings. Oh, you're talking about the encode thing? Don't sweat that man -- I didn't intend any hard feelings at all.

Thanks everyone :)

Jim,

You know you got the best dam adapter for the best dam price...so please don't cause any more drama with this long wait!

Thanks,
Go35 Fan

I'm sure he'll get it out ASAP. I mean what the hell would he do with a butt-load of adapters, right? I know if my name and rep were on the line, I'd be DAMN sure that everything was tip-top too. KILL IT JIM!!KILL IT!!!!

Thanks guys. It's just a matter of the last four weeks trickling away for the new achromatic lenses to come in :(

I have been contacted by a few people who are shooting right now or very soon and I am kludging together beta units for them -- they are longer than the final production unit by about an inch and a half, and I am offering them for less money even though the parts cost me more. The stipulation for this adapter is that it's Nikon F mount only for now, as the Canon FD is still in dev but the test unit should be here "any day now."

If you're absolutely in need of an adapter, use Nikon F lenses, and are willing to spend $430, just email me at info@go-35.com. The final cost is $430+s/h, and requires a half down deposit. Each unit takes about 7-10 days to make.

Otherwise, like the rest of you, I'm just sitting here and waiting. And waiting.

Desperate for Adapter

Desperate for Adapter

Hey guys,

I love your Go35 adapter. Frankly. I'm going to Denmark for a movie shoot and I would love to have an adapter to use when I go.

The problem is they are paying me much and do not expect me to bring one. However, it's my first feature and I would love to have one. However, I'm using the Hd100u and its hard to find an adapter for it.

I would love to get one of the Go35 adapters for my Hd100u.

I suppose its not really a question, just a comment and a wing/prayer.
