New 24bit Portable Field Recorder!

Seems a bit pricey for what you get but looks like a better qualify alternative to the iRiver recorder/players that are very popular among the event videography crowd for weddings and such. It will be interesting to see how it tests out.

I'd probably actually get the Edirol on account of the presumably not screwed up firmware (Roland usually does a pretty good job with their products). I guess you're paying a little extra for that darn built-in mic, but I'm sure it'd come in handy on occassion.

Sorry but it's MP3...I'd ask if a format like this one -- to rip on net, is it the most acceptable portable field recorder to shooting?...

Not sure what you mean here. Like aiff as opposed to mp3?

Sorry my ignorance Marlene! I don't know what is it "aiff"? My point is why all the people claim against a compression signal like HDV audio...MP3 is not compressed too? I thought when we are looking for a field recorder, we want the best uncompressed audio that we can find and not the same format that all the web uses to download audio files as entertainment...

well, yes and no. There is such a thing as "good compression" and "bad compression". Personally, I dont think the HDV audio is bad at all for most applications. But some MP3s you download off the net just suck. and SUCK badly. Its all about the encoding algorithm, bit rate blah blah blah. its complicated, but basically: You dont always have to have uncompressed everything.

One more thing though: uncompressed will always be better than even the best compressed. Even if your ear cant hear it.

Check out the link in the HDV audio thread thats floating around... Theres a cool article about compression.

Cheers...

PS - aiff is a format of sound (like wav, bwf etc), its usually associated with apple macs, cuz apple invented it.

Yeah I know...that was myself that opened the thread for to share the link there :) but that's precisely for that I'm here to read you.

did i miss something or does it NOT do xlr in??

i'm really thinking the tascam makes a ton of sense.

i was all ready to order it and then i spent $695 on the premiere pro / AE / audition / encore upgrade

i still get the tascam, but i figure i'll be busy playing with the new versions for a few weeks and we are moving into a new house at the end of march or maybe a little sooner, the construction is going quite well.

Nope, no XLR's on this little bugger, but it does put 24/96 recording into a nice, small package. The Tascam model does certainly look like an excellent option!

oh yes, sorry man... I see ty and co. have different views to mine, but then again, they shoot more quality crucial stuff, I do a lot of eng, and HDV sounds fine to me.

Could you tell me the model number of the Tascam you're talking about. Is it a portable field recorder?

Thank you!

I think for an extra 100$ the MicroTrack is a better deal. Has phantom power to 1/4" so you would have to get an xlr to 1/4" adapter but....

Checked out the MicroTrack2496. Awesome! They have a sample sound file and I was very impressed. I have many other MAudio products and they're all great. Ordered it this morning from b&h for $399 and they are in stock, many retailers are out of stock. So it'll be on it's way tomorrow and I'll let you know what I think and post a sample when I get it.

Thanks for turning me onto this. This is something that I wanted in the worst way.

Eeepp!!

Hope you read up on some of the "issues" with the Microtrack. It's an amazing device but it does have a couple of downsides and concerns (do a search on RAMPS for a list of them).

Best

It's a newsgroup. You can get to them from http://www.trewaudio.com/ or directly at http://groups.google.com/group/rec.arts.movies.production.sound?lnk=lr on google. Heres a link about some problems that I believe wabbit was referring to. I don't own one of these but have been thinking about getting one myself.

Thanks for the links. I have been reading through a lot of forums regarding the MicroTrack and I'm aware of what the issues are/were. I've also noticed that most of the postings seem to stop around the beginning of Dec. 05. I'm hoping that the firmware updates have resolved some of the little annoyances. As for the Phantom 30v power.....well....I'll just have to find out for myself since m-audio thinks it's sufficient to power most mics while saving on battery power.

Really.....what can you expect for a $399 field recorder?

Thanks again!

Marlene

No I agree, it does seem a great deal, just wanted you to be aware of shortcomings. M-audio really wants to market this to professionals and I think they will try and address some of the issues (they might have already, haven't kept up on it last month).

The only thing that kills it for me is the non-replaceable batteries, can't stend that trend in portable audio, definately causes problems for professional use.

Cheers
