Aside from the subject, how many cameras could you count there? Different day and age from when I was first born, that's for sure.

people in numbers are obnoxious. the sense of entitlement is sickening. law are laws, and some of them suck, but the people behind these cameras were friggin irritating.

+2

So what gives them the authority to assault a police officer?

Yes. I agree with the above comments.

It started out as a good video, "cop pulls gun at snowball fight". Writes itself. Then someone
yells "pig" and it just goes downhill from there. Perfect example of a mob mentality.

Just a bunch of whiny college kids with nothing meaningful to protest...

lol Wow, lots of anger here. The cop got out of his hummer because a snowball hit it? He then proceeds to pull out his gun and bark orders without first announcing that he was indeed a police officer?

And then the police issue a statement (which they later retracted) stating that the officer did not pull out his gun, which all of his police officer buddies backed, depsite hundreds of witnesses?

This reminds me of that cop who stomped that chick in that bar and walked away scott free, even though it was caught on video tape.

If anyone has entitlement issues it's the police in both of these cases.

And I don't remember a case ever that found someone guilty of assault for throwing a snowball.

These kids were just out trying to have a good time. Pretty grotesque that the police felt the need to march and then escalate things in a different direction.

Cop was an idiot for immediately drawing his weapon over a snowball hitting his hummer. The video never makes clear whether he immediately identifies himself, but from the sounds of some of the peoples reactions, and the fact you never see his badge at first, it doesn't sound like he made it immediately known he was a cop. No need to get that pissed off over it.

That said, the kids were obnoxious and should have gone to jail. Driving conditions looked hazardous enough, throwing snowballs at traffic could have gotten someone killed. And if it was just a giant snowball fight and a stray snowball hit the hummer, it makes no difference. Given driving conditions, a group that big shouldn't be having a snowball fight that close to the road. It dangerous, and produces a public safety hazard. Especially when they're stepping onto the street when it's dumping snow.

As to getting hit with a snowball qualifying as assault... in most jurisdictions, simply grabbing someone or giving them a light shove is considered assault, so nailing someone in the head with a snowball who wasn't party to the snowball fight should more than qualify.

I don't care how rude or obnoxious a cop is acting towards you, or whether you like the laws they are enforcing, you do what he says. Period. If you don't like it, that's what the courts are for. Shouting "F*ck You, Pig" isn't going to make them suddenly change their mind and leave you alone.

Yep, cop has an ego and got stupid-- needs a spankin--big time. A bare minimum of unpaid administrative leave for starters.

Nope, at least some kids were looking for an incident and escalated the situation when they got one (look and see how many are smiling). They also deserve a spankin--big time.

No body wins here but any police officer that draws a weapon on kids who have hit his car with a snow ball should be fired. Yes, the video is enough evidence. The DC police cannot deny it has a loose cannon out there.

Couldn't disagree more. This is why the majority of our supposed "protectors and server's" are on power trips (in my opinion). We have the obligation as citizens to learn our laws and rights, and to stand up for ourselves when those rights are being violated, no matter who is doing the violation or in what circumstance.

Just one case in point: Oklahoma State Trooper pulls over an AMBULANCE on it's way to the hospital (with a patient in the back) for not yielding to the officer as he drove by. He then attempts to arrest, then physically assault the EMT for doing his job. This officer has had numerous complaints filed against him, and has been fired at least once that I know of for taking his job way too seriously. As far as we know, he is still on the job.

These types of acts of violence and abuse of power happen on a daily basis in this country. I could ramble on all day about events similar that took place in just this year alone.

I honestly believe our police system is, for the most part, is corrupt. The "higher-ups" look for the people with attitudes just like the trooper in that video, and whats worse...

Uh, oh... I think I may have just taken this political thread too far for DVXuser.

/rant. Possible thread closer. My apologies.

Sorry Ryan, but I've known far too many cops to blanketly call them all, or most, or even a sizable minority, on power trips. Yes, some are, but that goes with any profession where someone has authority over another in any fashion (which is pretty much every profession).

This particular cop in the video was an idiot and buffoon. BUT, if you throw a snowball at a hummer, and the driver gets out and brandishes a gun (a thoroughly stupid thing to do) and begins yelling at you, and then later tries to arrest you upon telling you he's a cop, do you seriously try to resist? What do you hope to accomplish by that? When back up arrives, and they aren't quit sure of what's going on, but start instructing you to get back on the curb, do you seriously believe you have an obligation to start screaming at them and calling them pigs? What do you accomplish?

The officer who tried to arrest the EMT is an idiot and an ass. But what does resisting him accomplish? You end up with a bunch of bruises, and still go to jail. This is what the Courts are for. You do NOT have the right to start dictating on the spot what the cop can and can not do to you. If you feel the police have wronged you, you either sue, or go through other channels. But you don't decide that it is you, not they, who get to enforce the laws.

I'm sorry, but when a cop tries to arrest you or instructs you to do something, and you decide to "stand up for your rights" and disobey him, you will always lose. If you want to stand up for your rights, fine, but do it in court. That is how the process works. Do you really believe that resisting arrest or throwing snowballs at the cop or calling him a "f*cking pig" is somehow going to help?

Some of the people there at the snowball incident got identification and badge numbers and recorded the incident. I hope they filed a complaint. That is how it's done. The EMT didn't resist, remained calm, and was let go. I hope he sued the pants off of the trooper. That is how it's done.

I have another question about the EMT incident... did the ambulance have it's lights on? My brother was an EMT for both a private company and on a volunteer fire department. Just because your transporting a patient doesn't mean the lights are on or it's an emergency, so if the lights weren't on and they didn't yield, then the cop had a reason to pull over the ambulance. Not an excuse to behave the way he did, and if the lights were on it's a whole different story.
