I never want to shoot another wedding. Ive done 5 now and I cant stand them.
Four bags of equipment, and honestly I need about 2 more bags of stuff and an extra person. I hate how the photographer calls pretty much all the shots(i guess that is why its called the photo session) and i have to tape whatever he does, he can get into my shot but i cant get into his. Everything needs to be good, because you never know if u might need that shot later. I get around 8hrs between both video cameras, so right there is a full day of capturing. Two days of editing, one for a highlights and one for a full length version. Two days making a 30sec intro in after effects. Why do i do it? Because it is the first thing they see and really sets the mood, instead of going straight to a title menu. Then one to two days authoring the dvd, creating the inserts, dvd labels, and making/testing all the copies. So what is that, 7-8 days total. And i pretty much get paid the same for doing photography. I would actually make way more doing 2 photography weddings on one weekend and spend less time on them then doing 1 video.
The worst part of it all is the end. I feel proud of my photos and can say that I did all that i could to make them the best.
I feel somewhere between terrible to ok with my wedding videos. I wish I could have edited them more, shot them with more cameras, had a second operator. But I cant because i would lose too much money in the process.
Another thing is video equipment cost so much more than photography equipment. The best nikon camera is the D3 at $5k. But if you want the best video, you need like a cinealta or maybe a HPX-500. Which the bodies alone range from $12-50K. The lenses are so much more. The max I paid for any of my photography lenes was $1300. The HPX-500 lenses start at like $7k or something. Also photography you dont need to worry about sound. From my experiences, lighting was a nightmare. Sometimes i was on full gain with a 1/24 shutter for my video camera. For photography you either use the ceiling as a bounce flash or a garyfong/pocket bounce, easy. You can set up some lights for video, but it either blinds them or scatters the dance floor when you turn them on.
Another thing i really hate is the prep time. Photography none, video I need a minimum of 30 minutes to set up, then I have to tear the stuff down.
Wow, I feel better now.
