Netflix raises prices by 60%.

Depends how you look at it. I think most people either use the instant streaming, or the discs, but not both. The price only rises if you're using both services. I only use the streaming service so not any change for me.

Not really. If they increase their streaming content I don't mind paying a little extra. It has totally changed my viewing habits and nothing else out there comes close.

BTW, by "beginning of the end," I don't mean that Netflix is going to lose all its customers and go bankrupt, but that they could definitely phase out a bit as it seems a LOT of people are eager for something better to take Netflix's place.

You have a point. I very much prefer Netflix's streaming of TV shows, especially, to things like Hulu.

But at the same time, unless they get everyone to switch to streaming only, they'll still be paying $1bil or more a year in shipping costs. And even when they do get people to switch, then studios will jack the prices for licensing, at which point Netflix is screwed again.

I think ultimately Netflix will survive, and probably thrive even, but I think they're playing a chess game that's pretty close. They're pinning themselves between studios and customers, and originally they came in as the heroes to save us from the big bad studios who wanted us to pay lots of money to watch movies and TV, but now with price-jacking, they're jeopardizing their position and they risk ultimately becoming an unnecessary middle-man if the studios find a way to reach consumers more conveniently and directly.

I just cancelled my DVD plan.. for $10 we can get 10 movies from Redbox in a month. We never watched that many DVD's from Netflix anyway. We'll keep the streaming service though, as I really like it.

I just put my account on hold, figure I'll see how this shakes out. I use both DVD and Streaming and don't want to double my costs, hell they just raised the price a buck in January.

I agree that 60% is a ridiculous amount to increase.
I personally use both and this will honestly make me possibly change my mind about my subscription.

The reason I use both is the fact that the majority of their "new" releases are DVD only. If they would suddenly announce that
you could get 99% of new releases via streaming I would change my view on the matter.

If the service sticks to the format they currently do, 60% is nuts.

I like the streaming, except the selection is a joke. For a serious cinephile, this is not an option. Any time I want to watch a particular movie, it's not available for streaming. The other thing is how even what is available is being jerked around "available only until date X" in-and-out. F* that Sh*.

Meanwhile the DVD discs are often in poor shape. I keep having to send them back and wait for a replacement.

So for me, it's kinda necessary to have both streaming and DVDs. That said, I have my limit price-wise. I personally don't mind paying for content, and over the years I've paid a ton, but with the new generations coming up, if they get jerked around too much... look what happened to music. But I know this will not convince the dinosaurs, so we'll just have to wait for the inevitable. I hope Netflix pulls through, but...

I don't know. There's definitely room for a strong competitor to come in, but who? I don't see anyone on the horizon. It would have to be someone who can really deal with the rights-holders, and who can get a HUGE selection. Looks like the super-specialty Video Store still has a place in the landscape. Otherwise you know, other options.

Yeah, unplayable discs piss me off. Unfortunately, I get that just as commonly at the local video store here in LA, but that store is literally right around the corner, so if something doesn't work, I have a nice guy I can go and talk to who knows me by name, and he does everything he can to fix the problem.

I mostly enjoy Netflix for the TV shows. It's very easy, convenient and usually streams well. The best part is that if I want to watch an old episode of The Office that I've already seen before, I don't have to pay extra to do that as I would if I went to the local video store to rent a specific disc just to watch that one episode.

I know a couple people on Twitter who are planning to cancel before September. The more I think about it, the more I like my local store. It costs more, yeah, but every movie I could ever want is less than a block and a dollar away, and I like the guy there, so I'm pretty sure I'm done with Netflix. Just wonder how many people are in the same place.

I think people are seriously overreacting. My plan is going from $10 to $16. I always felt like I was underpaying for the hours upon hours of entertainment I got out of the service. I'm not worried about it.

+1

Really, who is gonna cancel their NF subscription over $6/month? Some might, but...it's $6. I pay more than double that to watch a few episodes of Dexter a month.

I don't mind as long as it means more content in streaming. If they don't vastly expand their streaming library and stuff continues to disappear in the next few months, I may drop them.

I already have the 3 disc at a time, unlimited streaming plan at $19.99 a month and it is going to change to $23.98 a month. I do both streaming and get discs regularly and even with paying $3.99/month more it is a great bargain. I hope that they expand the streaming selection, but even if that collapses, which I highly doubt, I will keep it until something much better comes along.

Likewise...but I pay the extra 3 bucks for blu-ray auto-upgrades.

We probably get twenty-some-odd blu-rays/month. (What can I say- the Callaghan screening room is seldom dormant)

The posts on Twitter are irrational and rude. People should be thankful for even the new prices that they can have a service like Netflix. I remember going to Blockbuster and looking up and down the isles for something. People need to shut up and realize they have a very valuable resource at their fingertips, especially for those who stream movies on their TV's or computer.

The price hike isn't as high as people make it out to be. It seems it hits some more than others and that does suck, but IMO with the price hike it's STILL a deal for what you get. If I watched a movie per day I could literally have more movies than I know what to do with and have them continuing to come in and rotated every day or other day and be spending WAY less than it would cost to rent them from a normal place. Redbox isn't likely to have what I want (especially on bluray) anyways so the whole $1 argument is out.

Lots to consider here but from what I've seen the past few hours, people are just being ridiculous.

Telling people to shut up isn't irrational and rude. :) It's opinion based, apparently that's your opinion though lol.

The kinds of things people are hammering me with on my Twitter account after making comments is hilarious. Everything from "they just want more money" to "this is random, they have no reason" to "I've been a member since 2004, early adopters should have preference." Amazing how many people have zero concept of business and why things are the way they are.

Netflix email's reason for the changes and the splitting of plans..."to better reflect the costs of each." Not so hard to understand.

Telling people to shut up isn't an opinion; it's a demand. A rude one.

Everything from "they just want more money" to "this is random, they have no reason" to "I've been a member since 2004, early adopters should have preference."

Now, those are actually opinions.

LOL.

LOL whatever, I'm not here to get beat up in here either. With the changes I'm only paying $1.99 more. It looks like the people with the smaller plans are the ones getting hit hardest and that is a bummer for them, but I still think the service price is good no matter what.

I retract the "shut up." That was rude. I was ranting and shouldn't do it here.
