Netflix Instant

Just realized the power of Netflix instant, been watching tons of movies on it after my long work days.. Just wanted to share some of what I've seen/what I've thought. Dunno if it's against subforum rules to post multiple movies, but I figured it was better than multiple threads..

Color Me Kubrick
John Malkovich is great, the true story is great, the movie is mediocre and really slow, what happened? I did like the soundtrack (mostly Kubrick) and the way it was shot.

Bigger, Stronger, Faster
Great documentary and insightful look into performance enhancers and the role that it plays in professional sports. Lots of stuff the major news networks never touch upon. Eye-opening.

Visioneers
Meh.. Zach Galifianakis is funny but the movie tries too hard to be Brazil.

Who the #$&% Is Jackson Pollock?
Loved this doc! Really funny, great character to follow, insider view of the art world. Was cool to watch considering I'm working at studios in East Hampton and the house they've put me up in is right around the corner from the Pollock-Krasner House. I def think that painting was a Pollock.

Step Brothers
Idiotic but fun. Seemed like a ton of improv was hard to cut around.

Dear Zachary
Heart-breaking doc. I don't want to ruin anything, just watch it.

Standard Operating Procedure
Has Errol Morris ever made a shitty doc? I don't think so.

Manda Bala
Very cool look to this doc, can't remember the last doc I saw that was shot anamorphic. Great subjects, interesting way to conduct interviews (heard it was inspired by Errol Morris), felt a bit over-stylized but still gets the points across. Don't watch if you're about to go to San Paolo!

Independent Lens: The Atom Smashers
Could also be called "LHC killed Fermilab," too bad cause this doc makes me feel like they could've found the 'God Particle' before 'em.

More later? Anyone else go on a Netflix Instant binge?

What I love the most about the Netflix Instant is discovering some Gems on there, it takes alot of looking but once in a while you find some great stuff.

I love docs, but love narratives more.. I think it's the compression that kills watching most narratives for me, docs can get away with it more (IMO). BTW, I thought King of Kong was hilarious!

Think I'll be watching a few from this list.. It's getting tougher to find the "gems."

The Unreasonable Man

This too.

Dexter...

...watch Dexter.

I used to be limited to 15 hrs of Instant viewing a month...and now I can't find anything about any limit to how much you can watch. Did they do away with the 15 hr limit?

I think it may depend upon what plan are you on.

I think you have to have the 2 at a time unlimited to get unlimited Instant viewing, but I could be wrong. It may only be 1 at a time unlimited.

Anyone try Netflix Instant with the PS3? I just received an email from Netflix telling me that the wait is over; Netflix Instant for PS3 is finally here. But, is it worth the switch?

Currently, I have Blockbuster Online and I like being able to return the flick at the store and picking up something onsite. However, it isn't instant. But before I make the switch, anything I need to know? Can you get instant in Blu-ray? How limited is the service? etc.

One more thing...does anyone know what the cost of the plan is? Per the website, you need an unlimited plan, however, unless you actually SIGN UP for Netflix for their trial, you can't take a look at their plan information. Pretty sneaky...

Rick, not sure about some of those, but if it's anything like the 360, you have a library of about 150 movies to watch (that's a guess). They expire after a few months, and bring new ones in (not all at once, over time). It's cool, but the choices do get limited, AND there's NO brand new releases. The newest I've seen is maybe 3 months old.

Roku is the way to go. Had mine since launch a couple of years ago, and Love it. Plus It does HD streaming and alot of the stuff looks really good. A heck of a lot better than streaming on the computer.

don't know about xbox, but netflix instant on ps3 has a heck of lot more than 150 movies to choose from. personally, i love it.

Zak, how much is the plan?

Right now I'm paying about $25 bucks for Blockbuster Online and am getting kinda put off by it. They used to let you exchange the movies in the store, send in your paper copies, then automatically ship out next in queue. So, you could very easily be in possession of 6 movies at once; the 3 from the store and the 3 new shipped ones. But, they halted that. Now, they don't ship anything until you've reliquinshed one of the 3 you are holding. Not a big deal really, just kind irritating. That, and the fact that their stores intentially wait seemingly forever to ship back your paper copies. Considering they are getting their $25 dollars every month, on the dot from me, I expect slightly better service.

Does this service work with the PS3 or do you have to purchase their player?

25, time to move on. I believe I pay 18 or 19 a month and that is unlimited BlueRays (2 at a time), and unlimited streaming. If you want normal DVDs, I believe it is about five dollars less. I never have to wait more than two days for another movie. The turn around is amazing. If I dump a movie off before the post gets picked up, I will have another one in my maile box the morning after next at the latest. And I live about 35 miles from a major city surrounded by lakes and fields.

cheapest plan, which is to have one dvd out at a time, is $8.99 and that comes with unlimited Netflix Instant viewing. same plan is $10.99 if you want the option to rent blu-rays one at a time.

Roku is a player. It was the first way to stream netflix feeds other than computer. Its only $99 and is able to do the higher bit rate HD feeds that IIRC you can't get on the other devices. It also can stream Amazon VOD and UNBOX movies and MLB baseball games. Mediafly is coming soon as is Blip.tv and Revision3 and MHz networks. Screen shots have also been shown with Flicker, Pandora and Youtube icons on them.

We love our Roku box. Oh and yeah their is a ton of content I have over 350 movies in my instant watch queue right now. From kids stuff for my son to Classic Jean-luc goddard and kurosawa films to new stuff. A lot of stuff drops on instant watch at the same time as it releases. Pineapple Express did this Oh and some stuff that is not even available as DVDs is available in instant watch like "that Mitchell and webb look".

You seriously need to move on. I could echo everyone's statement in here, Netflix is a good service. It's so good that I don't even need Cable anymore, I downgraded my cable and upgraded my Netflix plan. If you on a budget then the $8.99 is the best plan, you get unlimited movies a month(1 at a time) and free streaming. And their library of streaming is huge, may not be the newest films but you can find some gems on the Instant Views.

I'm not sure how the PS3 work, but I'm pretty sure alot more than 150 Titles are available for streaming, you can always look into it, call their customer service number 1-866-716-0414 and ask them about the PS3 thing, their real friendly. I myself have the Roku and it works great.

I had no idea about these, I'm gonna have to look into them. That would be awesome if they got those. But you know what I would love if they would do, alow you to watch some certain Cable Channels... but I'm sure the cable company's would fight that.

I'm on a 3 movie-at-a-time plan so I'm sure the cost is comparable but the turn around time is probably not. Blockbuster Online is anything but amazing. The Movies I drop off at the store take a few days to fall off of my queue. IMO, it should fall off that afternoon. So, yeah, I'm going to give Netflix a try.

Nothing like exercising your power as a consumer by giving a big "up yours" for lousy service.

Thanks again all, for the info...

pay 15 bucks/month or something for the 2 dvd's out at a time plan, and I'm pretty sure that all their plans included unlimited instant watch... I think they've got over 17,000 instant watch titles.

add a dollar to any plan for blu-ray.

I would assume thhat the ps3 option would let you watch any of the movies that you can on the ps3, but don't knwo that for sure. haven't seen anything stated one way or the other, and I don't have a ps3.

anyways, I love it. I've seen some pretty great films on instant watch, and some really obscure one's as well... Just watched The Elephant Man last night :)

Plus, it's not just the "bad" films on their instant watch... I read once that the instant watch films vs. the dvd only films actually have a slightly higher overall rating.... like 2.96 vs 2.92 or something like that.

Quality will be highly based on your internet connection speed. we've got like a 20mbps+ connection, and I've always thought the quality was more than acceptable.

here's the breakdown...

instant watch is worth the monthly cost alone in my opinion... when I finally moved and got off of satellite internet and have some smoking fast internet now... I love it.

Thinking of moving down to the one at a time plan myself and adding bluray to it just for bluray titles and what not... Haven't rented a physical disc in probably 6 months.

later,
jason
