netflix drops dvd queue from streaming devices

I don't even get dvd's in the mail anymore... I'm all instant watch...

But, I could see how it is a minor inconvenience for folks who use their blu-ray player, or gaming console for all netflix activity. Though, navigating netflix' catalog always seemed much easier with a computer than a remote or controller, etc...

I concur. Not a big deal. My Samsung Bluray does many wonderful things - searching through an extensive online database of movies is not one of them. I like their website a lot.

No, you're right, it's not a BIG deal, but I did like being able to add something that wasn't available instantly right away. Which reminds me... I need to send the DVD back that I got back in early December...

Wow. You must watch, like a total of 3 movies or so, over and over again :). But seriously, it's pathetic - it seems like 90% of the movies I want to watch are not streamable, and only available on DVD.

With all the fantastic, cheap and really quite unprecedented conveniences Netflix provides with their entire system, I don't see why so many people are upset about this. Instant streaming devices were kind of meant for, you know, instant streaming. <wink>

Plus, Netflix is working toward an entirely instant-streaming, DVD-less future, so I see this as a simple mindset shift toward that eventual goal.

I guess I can't really empathize, though, as I really only stream on my computer.

i love streaming videos, but the problem is most of the movies people want are available on dvd or blu-ray only.

check out the netflix top 100.
91% of the movies are not available for streaming.

before this decision, i was able to add these movies while sitting in front of the tv. now i have to get up and go to another device in the house to do it.

i guess it really irritates me when companies take away functionality or unnecessarily cripple technology.

Even if you only use their website to begin with, it should be easy to see how this is a problem for some people.

Before: Let me just search for this awesome movie on Netflix via my convenient iPhone/iPad/app-enabled TV. Oh, bummer, not available for streaming. I'll just add it to my DVD queue then. No worries.

After: Let me just search for this awesome movie on Netflix via my convenient iPhone/iPad/app-enabled TV. Oh, bummer, not available for streaming. I guess I could log into their website and search for it there, possible on a computer in another location altogether. Oh well, probably wasn't a good movie anyway. I'll just watch the same old streaming movies.

Netflix might claim the move will help them simplify the instant watching experience, but the cynic in me knows they're just bowing lower and lower to the pressure from the studios. They'll make it harder and harder to get their DVDs, with moves like this and one month delays of availability on new releases, until the feature is gone altogether. Sure, these studio deals supposedly allow them to add more movies to instant watch, but the balance is still fewer movies overall when DVD is no longer an option. This suits the studios just fine since they're still clinging to the sale of physical media and everything else is somehow a threat.

So yes, it's a small bummer for now, but a symptom nonetheless of Netflix moving in the wrong direction.

I watch a lot of movies and tv shows on netflix... the majority of the "tv" I watch is netflix :)
