NeoScene

To date I have been loading my T2i footage directly into After Effects and Premiere (CS4) for editing and I haven't had any issues that I'm aware of. I can play the video in real time without issue.

A friend of mine keeps telling me I 'HAVE' to get NeoScene that transcoding the files in NS first will make my work-flow much better... but I don't see it. It adds an extra step.

What am I missing? He can't explain it to me properly, I'm wondering if someone else can.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

There's plenty of information on Neoscene here. If you perform a search, you'll quickly see.

From my experience with Neoscene, it seems that you are creating an AVI file, with no loss in quality. It runs on a codec that adobe handles much more efficiently. AVCHD plays for a few seconds and then gets jittery on my PC. Neoscene works perfectly. Also, it converts the color space from 4:2:0 to 4:2:2 (I believe), so it will hold up better to keying and compression.

Too bad it also converts full range colors to 16-235 :embarasse

and I've heard there is some synch issues with sound from external recorder.
Otherwise yes it is working really great, but until these problems aren't fixed (I'm waiting for this), I won't buy it.

For after effects the H264 files edit fine... but in Premiere it's terrible! If you will be doing any edits in premiere, you will need to convert and NeoScene has been working great in premiere.

that may be the case with cs4 but have you tried cs5? Even with neoscene encoded files, it didn't play back perfectly smooth for me in cs4 but with the native 7d files in cs5, its like editing dv again. Plus cs5 automatically translate everything to 4:2:2 32 bit. As long as you use the mercury plugins like levels and curves you'll be grading in 32bit realtime fidelity.
anybody want to buy my copy of neoscene? $80
