Neoscene avi file vs DNxHD145

Shane,

My purpose for asking is because I'm going to begin editing my feature film (shot on unhacked GH1) and am planning for theatrical distribution. Therefore, I want to edit in Avid MC5 and do it in the best codec I can, planning for a filmout.

I am confused as to whether I should just edit in MC5 without removing the 60i wrapper, or use neoscene to remove pulldown. If I use neoscene, I don't know if I need to transcode to neoscene then transcode again to DNxHD 175 for avid.

I hope you have some answers, because no one else seems to know for sure.

No idea, I don't to film outs. Avid doesn't use the NEOSCENE or CINEFORM codecs...it uses DNxHD. Yes, you can access NEOSCENE via AMA in MC5 (I am guessing, if you bought the codec), but really, it isn't optimal for Avid. DNxHD is. Avid has a VERY narrow path to follow to do things right...that's what makes it stable. Follow that path.

Depends on where you want to do the conform. I am postproducing two features shot on the Canon 5D. I transcoded the files to Cineform as my interim codec so that I can manage the color gamma as RGB as well as embed an actual timecode based on creation date so that it was persistent and consistent. From there I made DNxHD 36 for my offline. For my finishing and mastering I can choose a variety of paths depending on what I actually need to deliver when the time comes and what's left in the budget.

Plan A: Conform to CineForm in DS and export DPX files as needed by DI system to be used
Plan B: Export EDL that references Cinform file to conform directly in a DI system
Plan C: AMA conform back to the Cineform files in a 1080p GD RGB (uncompressed) project type and finish as HD to HDCAM SR

Shane,
I agree that I should follow that path, but unfortunately the GH1 has that 60i wrapper to deal with. So I'm trying to remove the wrapper then edit in avid.
Is there any other way to remove this wrapper, or am I stuck using the neoscene option?

Sorry...I don't know. I've been away from Avid when things moved to 24p and switched to FCP. Now I am back, but don't know all the tricks. Let Michael answer this.

Bring the 60i footage into a 60i project, then open bins in your 23.976. The Mix&Match will kick in to create the 23.976 from the frames within the stream.

Dn't know what you mean by "wrapper" but I am assuming you mean that the video stream is 60 fields (59.94) and the 24 frames (23.976) is part of that stream with a pulldown cadence of some sort. If so, the answer is yes and is very easy to test per my steps above.

I've tried the mix and match method on MC5.3 but when you bring the 60i bin into the 24p project, the clips from the 60i bin play back with stutters, so I assume it's not pulling anything down.
