Need Vegas 6 Help

HI, I'm new to Video Editing and am having trouble figuring out how to get a 9 minute avi converted to mpg at a smaller file size yet preserving as much quality as possible. Currently when I render it as mpeg2 the video is 375Mb. Is there a way to accomplish this in Vegas 6?

Any help would be appreciated

in the render dialog, after choosing the mpeg2 format, click custom and then in the Video tab you can lower the bitrate, reduce the size of the frame, and probably some other stuff too that will lower the file size.

Thanks, TheMacB, appreciate the tip. I will experiment around with different bitrates until I find one that works best.

What do you want to do with the compressed video (i.e. web, DVD, iPod, PSP, etc.)?

Depending on the use of the video, you may only have a few options as to what formats you can encode to.

I am going to use it for the web. It seems based on my Vegas6 Editing Workshop book that I should be using mpeg1? So that should help too. We will also be offering it in wmv format.

For the web? I'd do WMV and MOV. The MPEGs will work for most people, and the quality will be nice, but to get reasonably small file size, you'll be looking at postage stamp-sized films.

They told you to use MPEG for the Web in your class? Whoa! Someone needs to pull them out of the dark ages. It's WMV or MOV as a given these days, and if you're feeling adventurous, maybe H264/MPEG4... MPEG1 has one thing going for it: cross-platform compatibility and support on pretty much everything, but that's where the advantages stop -- WMV or MOV can produce the same quality video at WAY SMALLER file sizes.

Just rendered 2:30 project in mpeg 4 10.7mb.
Same file .wmv 2 mb smaller with no loss in quality.
No brainer for me.

Hey All, thanks for all the great tips. We may have to rethink the mpeg & wmv and offer wmv and mov instead. Thanks, again
