So a client contacted me ,and wants me to record him live during his game.

similar to this video:
Now whatever mic i get needs to be very light as i don't want it to affect his performance on the court.

Does anyone have experience with this sort of thing?

Or advice on a good reliable mic that could do the job
preferablly under $300

quick answers are extremely appreciated :)

Are you asking about just the microphone capsule itself or do you mean $300 max for the mic, transmitter, and receiver? If the latter, you need to at LEAST double that number before you get close to anything worth considering.

well i was hoping for under $300 for the whole package
but i guess i could always rent one

You're not going to find ANY wireless system for that cost let alone one that is going to be durable enough AND more importantly safe for the players to wear.
You're ONLY choice here is to rent if all you have is $300.

One of the standards used is the http://www.q5x.com/
Zaxcom trx900lt's were used earlier this year for some nfl stuff, and I know of Lectro SMa's that have been used for pro sports.

I know a few years ago at least the NHL trainers had to be the ones who put the mic's in the pad's. I mention this because I'd hate to see you be liable because
you put the transmitter in a really bad place causing an injury to the player.

Do yourself a favor and call one of the dealers (TAI, Trew, Coffey, Location sound..etc) and talk to them about it.
Im sure they have been through it all before and can best help you with what they have available to rent.

Parabolic dishes use an omnidirectional microphone capsule positioned at the focal point. They do not (and can not) use directional microphones, and most especially not a line-gradient type microphone (i.e. "shotgun").
