i want to get amazing sounds for my dlsr canon 7d. i dont want to record through the camera as it will always record at 16bit and the 7d only has a mic input not an auxillary input which means it will always always use the built in preamps. i got the sony pcm-d1 and i think its great. but unfortunately no XLR inputs. you can get the adapter but thats another 600 bucks. then i was looking at getting the sound devices 702 recorder. its great but really expensive. i will buy it if it is the only thing in its class. the objective is to get awesome beautiful audio for documentary stuff. if you have any other suggestions of possible field recorders please let me know.

Here's the thing. Equipment equates to about 20% of what it takes get "amazing" sound for film. The other 80% is technique and thousands of hours of experience, and then about 5 hours or more of audio post for each screen minute.

Start here: Audio 101. Pay attention especially to the DVD linked at the top of that thread.

As has been said, it's more the user than the tools. That aside, the question of "which tool" has been asked repeatedly, and a quick use of the search function will lead you to a wealth of information!

As I suggested before, the MixPre-D will help immensely now that I know you have the Sony D-1 to record to. Jut use the Tape out of the MixPre, and go into the Line input on the D1.
