Need to get this off my chest...

Ok,

So we all are in this field, and we all realize how incredibly expensive it is. Every time I turn around I tend to become more depressed. I went to B&H and saw the old school HVX200 Discontinued.

I am an Adobe user, and I just recently got CS3 (within 6 months), of course here they go and release CS4. I just can't keep up... Oh well, maybe someday I'll have lots of money and I can keep buying all the new gadgets.

Thanks for letting me ramble.

CS3 isn't any worse that it was a few months ago.
The HVX200 still produces a killer image.

I did a job recently where I was shooting with the DVX100a.
Remember that camera?

I guess my point is - the desire for the newest thing is always going to be there - but the need for it definitely isn't.
The tools you have today are every bit as good as they were months ago.

Create the best you can with what you have at the time you have it.
That's all we can do.

EDITED TO ADD:
And as a side note - you will never have a lot of money if you keep buying all the newest gadgets.

Man, relax just because some new model/version comes out, it doesn't mean the model/version you have now will stop working! or somehow can not continue doing what you are already doing!

The thing about products and software alike, very few people ever actually (IMHO) truely master and use every ounce of feature/function available.

I still use Microsoft Words 97, hey works for me :)

I know the feeling. But, Louis is right about the not-the-latest-version of products. They could have waited another 6 months or so and they will probably release most versions annually, but it won't change what I plan to do right now. I figure its good that they will keep trying to improve their product, I'll let others work out the bugs, then upgrade when I really need to.

You've got to keep one thing in mind, we're a capitalist country with corporations that spend billions of dollars on marketing every year, to keep consumers like yourself feeling the way you feel right now, except most suckers actually buy into it, run out and buy the next model when it's absolutely unnecessary.

Don't be a sucker, it's not the gear, it's the person and his ability behind the gear. In fact, I still have Photoshop 7.0 and run a successful photography business with that and an old Nikon D80. Don't tell me about updates ;)

Relax, time is working for you.

Buy a brand new camera and got problems till the first 2 firmware bugfixes come out.
Buy a brand new software and go crazy cause this and that is still not working till the next update (or the next-next update).

I lay back, watch all the early adopters getting almost heart attacks cause the new gadgeds ruin the expensive production and customers are breathing down teir nacks, while they try to figure out a workarround for the new software while the clock is ticking.

After a while I go shopping and buy used (or than cheaper - cause the next generation is arrounf the corner) mature products for half of the price and get all the benefits and my work done.

I always happens... i stress over it..

luckily... Scarlet and MAc have released my stress... wont need an upgrade for a long while now....

teehee (when Scarlet comes out i mean)

^^My PERSONAL Opinion

I agree with all, still would be nice to have though. Guess until then we just keep doing what we do best. :)
Cheers!

Photoshop 7 is probably still one of the most popular pieces of Software out there and I use it all the time. If not for the coming HD era I would've NEVER sold my DVX. I even figured out how to fake 16:9 so it would actually make a 16:9 image and act like a 16:9 image on the iPod and Apple TV.

I'm still using an original DVX100 with the stock lens and Sony Vegas 6, and I'm getting great results. All new technology does is help you acquire a certain result easier than with the "old" equipment, but the "old" stuff is still relevant. 35mm is arguably "superior" to 16mm, technically speaking, but 16mm, and even 8mm, still have their place. But I can understand the desire to want the newest gear. I definitely find it hard to catch my breath just reading about all the new stuff coming out at the this rate.

I am sometimes overwhelmed as well, I sit here in a heap of debt with my d80 and my dvx100b while I watch friends shooting with their d3's and people on here cough kholi cough who are priveledged enough to own 2 full red kits. But it is true these companies all belong to our capitalist society who's sole purpose is making loads of money and with that comes the millions they spend on advertising in order for us to want the latest and the greatest. Ultimately, shoot more complain less, maybe one day we will be at a spot where we can afford to be on the cutting edge, until then DVX 4 life sucka.

Dude... people still ask for VX2000's.....

I wind up convincing them that the DVX100's 60i is as good as it... And it is... Just not as sensitive.

I spent a relative fortune on my DVX, FCP, MacPro, and various other things, knowing fully the HD era is dawning. If I either get this supervision job at work or make a few bucks doing wedding videos and web stuff, I'm going to buy another Mini-DV camera. HD is still a way to go for me. I gotta figure out what I'm doing with this simple stuff first! :)
