My basic problem is this:
My edited sequence plays perfectly in the "project" window in FCP (the playback window on the right), but when I export my sequence to QT movie, the edits are messed up in the exported quick time video.
That's it!
Now, I've spent a lot of time on forums trying to fix this, so let me tell you what i am doing, what I think is wrong, and then hopefully someone can help me fix it.
Let's put aside "capture" issues as well. I have been getting flamed for my "work flow" by pro editors, but I have a lot of good reasons to do things the way I am doing them that I don't want to have to explain here. (See PS)
I have a 45 minute tape of birds feeding in my back yard. Unfortunately most of the footage is useless because it's just waiting for the birds to come into frame. Out of all this I have about 25 shots of birds which amount to about 3 minutes of edited video.
My work flow has been:
1) Capture the whole DV tape at once
2) Mark out the DV starts and stops to divide the captured footage into "actual shots"
3) Select these segments and go Modify/Make Subclip to turn the segments into clips.
4) Drag these clips to the timeline
5) Edit
6) Export sequence
Now, the problem is that my edits are moving on the timeline (because I am cutting video out with the razor tool), but my source video isn't moving, so what is happening is I am getting "editing creep". The first 2 or 3 edits of my exported QT file are fine, but the longer the QT movie runs, the more out of whack my edits get until finally my edits are referencing video I cut out of the timeline before I even started editing.
So, my question:
- Will making each of my subclips independent get rid of this "editing creep" problem?
- If not, what will?
I just want my exported video to match what I have edited and playing correctly in the sequence.
Thanks!
PS: The reason I am importing the whole tape is that I DO want all of the "shots" and I only want to have to play my shot DV video once in the camera to save the camera heads. I'd much rather "edit" in FCP than log and capturing each clip off tape. Moreover, when I go to shoot my motion picture with 1 camera we are going to be doing multiple recordings of each shot (take) because once we move the camera I don't want to have to go back and "match angles" of original shots. By getting all (3, 4, maybe 5) "takes" onto the DV tape into FCP, I can just throw the clips onto the timeline to get a feel for which shot is going to work best. Once a shot has been picked, I can toss the clips I didn't use without altering the source video (master clip). If I need to get a segment back, I can re-analyze the DV file on the HD and just re-create the clip without having to go back to the original DV tape.
[Edit] A couple of other reasons I want to only do 1 full capture of a DV tape and be done with the tape: Timecode breaks (errors) and Dropped frames! I noticed already that if you try and shuffle the tape back and forth or even just play it and rewind it 2 or 3 times you inevitably stretch the DV tape and this results in problems. The last thing I want to have to do is worry about "fixing" DV footage to fix timecode issues and/or dropped frames. Doing 1 capture 1 time with no errors is the best way to go. Once the file is digital, anything short of file corruption or bad editing is going to keep your time code and frames pristine. I thought I better add this because this is a REALLY good reason to work the way I "want to".
I don't know. It all makes sense to me...
