Need to edit sideways footage

I did a shoot today for a client where I had the camera mounted sideways. After the shoot, the client asked me if I knew how to set up the footage and timeline in FCP7. I told then I've never had to deal with the footage in post before, but I was willing to help them figure it out. After an hour of messing around I couldn't find a way to do it with out rendering. Is there a way to do it without rendering?

You just leave the footage the way it is. Is it for a portrait display...ie the screen is sideways? I've done this for a few clients and the only thing I do is rotate my viewing monitor so its the right way.

If I understand correctly... put the clip on the timeline and in the 'viewer', select the 'motion' tab...rotate & scale the clip as needed.
Hope that's the answer you're looking for....

We just did something similar. It all depends on your final output / display. For us, it was going to be displayed on vertical TV's. So for that one, thekreative is right. Just rotate your 2nd monitor (if you have one). Otherwise, it'll be a pain in your neck. Literally. Be aware your mouse will react weird on that monitor, though (up is right, right is down, etc).

Update: What I did was install Panasonic's AVCCAM Importer QuickTime plugin so MPEGStream Clip could read the MTS files right off the card. Then in MPEGStream Clip I rotated the clips 90 degrees and set up the custom frame size while simultaneously transcoding to ProRes. Unfortunately you can't batch this process since creating the batch bypasses the 90 degree rotate option. Once in FCP7, drag the clip to the timeline and click "yes".

What is your output format?

Are the display screens mounted portrait or landscape style?

If your screens are mounted portrait style then there is no need to rotate the footage.
Simply edit it and deliver it as-is and it will display correctly on portrait screens.
I can't see much use in shooting portrait style and displaying that within a landscape 16:9 frame...
