GH4 Need to do firmware update 2.2 on new GH4. Card has structure, won't allow copy...

Hi
Just got my GH4. First thing I did was check the firmware. It's 1.1.

So I downloaded 2.2 to my MacBook Pro. I know how to do the upgrade (a dog could do it), but all my memory cards used with my GH2 have the dlsr card structure (DCIM, MISC, PRIVATE) and won't allow me to copy anything to them. At least as far as I know...

Anyone know how to copy the firmware .bin update from a mac to a memory card with structure on it?

Thanks for the reply.
Actually, formatting was the first thing I did. But when I took it out and put it in the MBPro, I couldn't copy. I figured that would happen because seems like a couple years ago I'd tried to copy something from the mac to a card used in my GH2 and couldn't.
I wish it was that easy. I think on windows it supposedly is.
Btw, I'm not even sure which direction pushing the 'lever' locks the card but I tried both.

Huh? What do you mean, it won't copy? I may not use Macs much but I thought they'll just treat a SD card like any disk drive and just copy the file to it? The so-called "structure" is just a bunch of folders and files.

Sometimes Mac's are finicky when dealing with drives that didn't have the file system formatted on the host machine itself. There could be so many factors at play such as a metadata mismatch, permission misunderstandings, blah blah blah. Basically Unix is being fussy.

elmerlang: Try this... re-format the card on the GH4 and take two photos. Then try and copy the .bin file over again. Make sure you re-format the card, not just erase all the data.

If this doesn't work, try and re-partition the card in Disk Utility as a MS-DOS (FAT) format under a Master Boot Record partition scheme. Then pop it back in the GH4 and repeat the steps from above.

Download SDFormatter, format the card then copy the bin file to the root of the card. If this does not work... Format the card using SDFormatter then place the card in the GH4 format in camera then place in MacBook Pro SD reader and drag bin file into root directory.

Are you using the built in card reader on the laptop? My Macbook Pro has a dodgy card reader/writer. It seems like a fairly common problem. I can read and copy from any card but can't write to any card. This sounds stupid, but if you slowly wiggle the card outwards while pasting to the card, there is a point at which the card is writeable. It's a very tiny point though and very annoying trying to get it right. If you can't format the card on your laptop this is probably your problem.

A much better option in this case is to just use a card reader.

Thanks all for your replies, I didn't know they were here, sorry.

First, I'm reluctant to do any formatting, etc on the mac cause Apple puts its fingerprints on everything it can.
Second, a couple of you are on to something (as opposed to on something) because finicky is right. I was messing around dragging, getting the slashed circle 'no yo can't', I did this I did that, something maybe about cmd+clicking on icon I'm not sure what, but the open sesame worked and I was shocked to discover I could now copy the update to the card and updated.

Thanks again, all.

I'm also a MacBook user.

Haven't done the most recent firmware update, but with all the previous versions I couldn't update using Sandisk 64GB 95 MB/s cards. If I use older & lesser spec'ed, cards I have no problem with the updates.

^^

Use an older, small size card.

My 3-year-old 45MG/s Class 10 U-1 wouldn't copy till God or Magic made it happen. I really think it was something to do with CMD+clicking on card icon, maybe I tried all the OPT+ and SHFT+ versions but something happened and I could—Poof!—copy.

I figured out what worked for me: Slide the lock/unlock slider on card down and back up. Insert. Copy is possible.

That's all I know. It works.
