Need The Best External Mic for this Camera, Help!!!

Thank you all, I just went to BnH and bought the

1- AT4073A
2- ADJUSTABLE SHOCKMOUT F/
3- SHURE A15AS ATTENUATOR
4- RYCOTE 12cm/MH SOFTIE FRONT ONLY
5- GITZO G556C WEKEND FISHPOLE CARBON FIBER

SO, I will use this for club shooting and large crowds on the camera, and on the pole for movies and in and out door dialogue scenes.

What do you all think?

It all came out to $896

Do you think there is better for less then $1500? because I have 7 days to return it, and if there is another set a lot better for an extra few hundred I would buy it.

Thank you all again!

Also, phantom power--how does it work on cameras? Do I need something extra to make it work?

Both the HVX and DVX will send out phantom power. You just have to switch it on. It's on the side of the camera, where are the other audio switches are.

Sweet info all..

I'll also vouche for the Octavas... They are incredible mikes recommended by high-end audio pros I know.. and have served me very well at doing stereo recordings with a mixed pair...

The sanken is a SWEET mike but pricey...

One not mentioned that I love and bought was the AT 835ST M/S mike. Great for concerts and stereo M/S imaging.. and fabulous for mono recordings as well. Holds up against a 416 up to 5 feet from the source for dialogue on a boom... Really has become my one main device.. and it fits nicely in the HVX.. And I got it all for 400 bucks... Not too shabby.

Good advice all around ya'll. treu audio is also a great vendor...

so, did I make a good purchased? I am only asking because I still have time to exchange... You never know.

Thanks!

Personally, I would want to listen and compare the sound quality of TWO Octava hypers to ONE AT shotgun before making a final decision. Based on my experience and opinion, a pair of hypers would probably capture more nuance in the music than a shotgun ever could, particularly indoors where shotguns are the devil.

Just my 2 cents, for what it's worth.

I think you made a good choice for what you want to do, ie: record sound with an on camera mic. The Octava's are good mics, I have 2 from The Soundroom, and they will make a great stereo recording. Hyper's are much different than shotguns, in respect to the way they capture sound, so you have to listen to compare.

If you are serious about your sound, you should hire a sound person, especially if you are shooting scripted dialogue scenes. Documentary sound can be done single person, IF you have a GOOD wireless lav (Lectrosonics, Audio Limited or Zaxcom..there are NO others to consider).... If it's an important shoot, where you need good sound, hire a sound person!!! I've been doing location sound for 15 years professionally, and can get good sound while shooting camera...but man it's hard to do both jobs and have it all top notch...something could always have been better after one of these shoots...there's just too much going on for 1 person.

putting any mic on camera is a compromise. at 6 feet+, even the best shotguns will not sound all that different from a cheaper azden, especially for dialogue. if you're looking for remotely decent sound, jethro_s is on the money -- get someone on a boom, dedicated to sound acquisition. even if you invest in a wireless kit, managing both picture and sound is near impossible for one person if you want to capture anything remotely good.

i have an at4073a. it's a great mic. but it's not all-purpose. a good compliment, as others suggested, would be a good hyper or two. in fact, if i could buy only one mic, it would probably be a good hyper, because they're much more forgiving indoors and out. the oktavas are awesome buys, and, on the pricier side, the at4053a's and akg blue line mics are up there. they are not the schoeps, but they are very good, less expensive alternatives.
