I have a friend who's interested in buying an FS5, but wants to see how the footage will behave in his NLE. Is there anywhere he can download some footage recorded INTERNALLY, straight from the camera?
What kind of footage does he want? XAVC? AVCHD? 4K? HD? 30, 24, 25, 60 fps? 25, 35, 50 or 100 Mbps? S-LOG2? S-LOG3?
You could just save him some time by telling him that if he is using a modern computer and an up-to-date NLE he won't have any trouble working with footage from the FS5.
You could also advise him to take a look at the FS7 instead of the FS5. He'd be getting a camera that is many times better than an FS5 for just a few dollars more, and he'll recoup a lot of that cost difference someday when he sells it.
well he's getting close to retirement, and just wants a decent super35 (up from an EX3). 24fps,50Mbps, he's using Final Cut 7 on an old Mac, so I don't know whether AVCHD or XAVC is better.
If he's still in the dark ages with FCP7 he should avoid buying any camera that records XAVC because he'll just be wasting his money. You should steer him towards a used F3 or FS100. There are some great deals to be had on those older super35mm cameras, and even the FS5 and FS7 don't look as good as the F3 if he doesn't need 4K or HFR -- which he can't have with FCP7 no matter which camera he buys. Tell him to get an F3. Even if he decides to upgrade to another camera (and NLE) in a year or two he'll probably be able to sell if for about whatever he buys it for today.
But as long as he's going to stay on FCP7, it is waste of time for anyone to go to the trouble of sending him footage from an FS5.
Thanks for the info. I actually did mention an F3 to him. Not sure what kind of HFR he would need. Does the F3 firmware upgrade have 60/1080 internally?
Nope, the F3 can only do 30P internally.
Your next suggestion to him should be that he upgrade to a modern NLE. He might even want to give Resolve a try as they keep adding more and more editing features to what used to be soley a color grading application. And it is free. But then again, if he's on an ancient Mac he would also need to upgrade his computer. But if he's thinking of dropping $6K + lenses on a FS5 he could certainly afford an F3 and a new computer.
But 720P is not HD, and 60P requires an external recorder. So my answer is correct, 30P is the best the camera can do. If you need to acquire HD video faster than 30 fps, the F3 is not a good choice.
