Hey everyone,

I'm about to start shooting a promo video for a local college where i give an overview of each department, and have put together the following sound package. I will be recording interviews mostly, inside and a lot outside as well, and also just general settings such as inside classrooms and during student activities. So here's what I'm planning to order:

Oktava Mk012 mic from Sound Room

Sony MDR-7506 headphones
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-7506-Pro-MDR-7506-Headphones/dp/B0002H02ZY

Rycote BBG

Rycote Jammer

Rode SM3 Shockmount
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/398316-REG/Rode_SM3_SM3_On_Camera_Shockmount.html#features

25' XLR cable
1.5" XLR cable
Y split XLR cable for lower level backup (could use a recommendation on one of these)

Boom Pole - whatever works off ebay, as everything above will suck up almost all my available money.

So this Oktava system will be working on a Boom going directly into my HMC150. yes i will try to upgrade to a MM-1 or something later for better preamps, but right now i dont have the money for it. Could also be some circumstances where I will go into my zoom H4N recorder if whoever i get to do sound needs more freedom. The only other sound equip i have is the Azden shotgun mic that came with the HMC150 kit:

Please let me know if i have matched up things that are incompatible, or if there is something of equal value that would work better, but i really dont have much room to add anything or upgrade to higher value products. Thanks!

Mostly a decent package. Beware the fishpoles on ebay. There are a couple of sellers hocking what they call "articulated boom poles." All they are are stage-quality mic stands with their tripod legs removed. The tension adjustment at the "articulation" is unreliable for boom mic use.

The Azden is not really a good shotgun. It's an on-camera mic designed to pick up a lot of sound, and won't do you much good on the end of a boom.

Also, the Y-splitter isn't needed. With Panasonic cameras, you can plug the mic into Input 2 and set both record channels to record from that input, plus you maintain full level control per channel.

I know you have st yourself a limit, but do not cheap out on audio. You'll hate yourself later if you do. Call DVeStore and look at getting a shotgun/boom package (which will come with all the necessary cables). They also carry the Sony 7605 headphones, and I believe they might have the BBG and Jammer (not 100% certain, but ask). Then, all you have to get is the Oktava.

Humm got the rest of the stuff from B&H, but when i went to sound room to find the Oktava w/ hypo cap that people have been saying i can get for around $165 to $180 with the DVX promo code "DV", i cant seem to find it. I can only find the $250 "Oktava MK012A" is the "A" model an upgrade and they no longer carry the original, cheaper mic? What am i Missing?

Here's what i collected in a word doc from previous posts:

"The Oktava mk012 is a bargain that gets great results indoors with hyper cap. The best place to buy this mic is at the Sound Room 'cause you can get it with the hyper cap only... and that's all you really need. $165 with the coupon code "DV"."

" Includes: Oktava MK012 w/ Hyper Cardiod Cap ($180)"

" 1x - Oktava MK012 with hyper cardiod cap from www.sound-room.com ($179)"

Hi ,
I ordered okatava MK012 from sound room like 3 to 4 days back. You know how long approximately would they take to send them home.I sent couple of emails but didn;t get any replies.Well I understand it is just Paul handling the whole thing but I am just asking just for information.
I have a flight to ticket to India on Nov6th.I hope I would get that atleast a week or 2 before that :-).
Thanks
Jay

did you pay $165 to $180 or more like $250? Im not sure how long it takes to ship to an address (im in VA). I would also be interested in knowing this, as if its going to be more than 4 or 5 days i would rather order from another, speedier option. I would like to have the mic by next wed Oct 21st.

The price of the Oktava had gone up. I got mine from Sound Room for about $180 2 1/2 years ago but I don't think it's available for that price any more.

Geez why would the price go up? Anyone got one they want to sell heh?

Help a recent college grad out! Im ever so poor.

Price went up as the mic built up a rep as a decent cheap hyper. Most of the posts saying you can get one for $165 are several years old.

I ordered one for 249 less 5%.Ordered on 13th Oct and haven't heard from them yet.I guess its going to take more time.I sent them an email but no response yet which was expected as they already mentioned .Paul & ben are the only ones who maintain the show and understandably it might take time for them to respond.
If you want it very soon then Sound Room is not the place I guess.

I know you have st yourself a limit, but do not cheap out on audio.

C2V that's my motto! Maybe if your getting started from nothing - get what you can afford to get going, but after that hold out for the real deal. You only have to buy the right mic once.
