FS7: Need recommendation for a 7" monitor

I liked Marshall monitors but it was years ago since I used one as I felt they fell behind in features.

I have a client who has an older one and likes it 'cause he says what he sees on there is what he sees when gets back to the office to edit (i.e. looks the same as how it ends up on larger screen).

I used to shoot with a guy who had a few small Marshall's and the image was really poor and the off-axis viewing was just about the worst I've ever seen in an LCD.

I will let you know in a few weeks if it is "satisfactory". Isn't it depressing that when a company has a near perfect product, although lacking in the latest features like LUTs, that they discontinue it so we are forced into their new, more expensive line up. I realize iKan is a less than stellar name, I always avoided them, but I am pretty good at research and those 3 models are all there is out there for 7" which includes a SDI input, so I'm stuck. I bought at B&H because I know I can return it without a hassle, in which case I would move up to the $1000 model for its brightness, but being retired and purposely trying not to make too much profit, it's a ***** to shell out $1000 that was unnecessary.

Also, I will research the dimensions of those Atomos rubber corners and see if they will fit and if I can buy them separately. Maybe spray paint them black. Perhaps Home Depot has some rubber I can Gorilla Glue onto the corners. That is what is lacking in SmallHD, they assume you won't drop it. Both times I dropped my OLED 7 was when it was coming into or out of its case, got butterfingers. It did land both times on a corner so rubber would have definitely helped.

Later,

Ned

Im not sure Small HD is forcing people into buying more expensive monitors.. if that was the case they couldn't have made an SDI focus.. which is incredibly cheap for what you get.. personally TBH I dont think its terrible that a company doesn't make parts for 3 or 4 year old monitor.. that has only broken because its been dropped more than once .. Marshall Ikan etc.. are not as good as small HD.. better to pay a bit more and get a better product.. I feel your cutting off your nose to spite your face a bit Ned.. by avoiding Small HD just because they dont haver parts for an older monitor.. for good or for bad much of our gear is becoming throw away..Im an older dog like you and remember when gear would last for 15 years easy.. but you needed the 15 years to get your money back as the costs were hugely more than now.. an Fs7 is a few grand more than a top end ..tricked out Mattbox with a few filters used to be.. and cameras/ lens sets cost the same as small houses .. the days of repairing monitors are long gone.. I started out in the CRT Sony monitor days.. now I have this SDI focus on camera for $600.. day light viewable..

To me once you spend close to $1000 on a small tv screen, basically a screen from a $200 smartphon in a box you should be entering a price class where you get customer support and reliable connectivity.

If you want a $200 screen in a box with no customer support and sh_tto weak connectors.. just buy a $200 one from amazon!

Small have really pissed me off with thier build quality/support/price ratio.

(BTW I have Dp1, DP6 and 502.. Im convinced the first to die will be the 502, its SDI is already dead, the joystick getting non responsive)

The moment my 502 dies I will buy this..

I think the cages are more or less just there to mount things to and give you more to 'grab on to' than actual protection, at least from drops.

Hi Morgan.. Yes I guess bad customer support would piss me off too.. maybe things have changed.. Im relatively new to Smash HD products.. about a year or less I bought my first SDI focus.. any questions I had have been swiftly dealt with via email.. directly with Small HD.. firmware up dates have been sent etc..I have no complaints about their service..or the equipment .. BTW where are you getting a smart phone for $200.. my phone cost a lot more than my Small HD .. I think the question is the other way round.. why are phones with good screens $1,500 plus..

Well the fundamental screen you are buying is probably not much different from this.. https://www.amazon.co.uk/ForU-1-Mon...qid=1546033598&sr=8-7&keywords=1080p+x+screen

Im half tounge in cheek with my responses.. but also Im off of Zambia again next week. For a fornight of bouncing in and out of a 4by4 and being mobbed by kids.

What will break on our shoot? Canon 16-35? Canon 70-200? Sony FS7, the Nikon D850? The soundies Sound Devices recorder?

No.. if we are nailed with a problem it will be the SHD monitor.. I absolutely guarantee it.

Its just not production ready kit.

I promise we are not paranoid about any other bit of kit.

And for $1000 I want my monitor to be in the same class as all of the other toys. Or just buy 2off $150 monitors and have a spare.

Knock-on-wood, I haven't had any issues out of the four smallHD monitors that I own(2x DP6's & 2x DP7Pro OLED's). BUT if you compare the build quality to my "small"(8.4" & 9") Panasonic field monitors, the BT-LH900A and BT-LH910, then yes, the smallHD's are absolutely toys. BUT I'm also not mounting the 910 on the top of my camera with a Noga arm, either.

Yes I have 2 of the old Sony BT LH900 9 inch monitors.. built like tanks and weight not much less.. but as you say .. no way would I put that on my camera..and Ive had younger Dir complain about its weight as a wireless monitor.. I got the focus because even my TV Logic 058W.. is a bit heavy for on board.. the focus weighs nothing .. its not a plastic case.. its SDI.. there is a screen cover.. and 800 nits.. and its $600 .. if it last for 4 years I,ll be more than happy.. if I trash it myself.. I,ll just buy a new one..

I would advise you to buy two of the focus SDI monitors for $1,200.. then you will have a spare.. Ive traveled quite a bit with mine.. the housing is a lot better than plastic Shogun/Atomos monitors.. that's why they have the rubber corners !.. if you treat it the same as your lenses and camera .. why would it break ?.. I mean yes monitors are delicate to some degree..

The focus monitors are 720.

why would it break ?

WHat breaks is the connectors. My 502 had a small impact from the front and the SDI came off the board. Most of the others have intermittent HDMI problems.

Cable management is a major deal when the camera is on your lap in a 4.4 or in crowds.. having the cables sticking out into free space is super weak.

Also on my 502 the 'joy' stick is intermittent.

Im not going to break the panel itself.

HDMI focus is $499 and SDI $599 on B&H.. is that £720 .. wow almost double ...thats nasty ..I dont know the 502.. but the focus the SDI and HDMI is recessed.. it does mean you need a Small HD priority HDMI cable.. but I would never rely on HDMI cables for professional use.. or have alot of spares..Ive had my camera in crowds ,boats, cars, snow mobiles etc.. nothing ever snapped off.. unplug for travel .. I think you need to just take a bit more care if your snapping off SDI connectors on a regular basis..

It's always good to take care, but you know... productions happen. :-)

I think back to some other equipment where some vendors would attach their SDI connectors directly to PCB boards, while other manufacturers would attach their SDI connectors to backplanes.... One had lower production costs but was weaker and irreperable if broken, one was more rubust and fixable if something did go wrong (which it hardly ever did).

When I've worked with SmallHD monitors, they've seemed decent. But I don't own one...

Morgan, do you mean Focus monitors cost £720 in your neighborhood, or that their resolution is 1280x720?

Looks like the "normal" Focus monitors are 1280x720, while the Focus OLED monitors are 1920x1080:

Just so we're all talking and complaining about the same thing. :-)

I meant resolution.

Revisiting the SmallHD website they clearly are apparently getting a few things sorted .. I just dont like them because I was a bummed beta tester (at my expense)

I dont therefore trust that the latest iteration is not beta too!

Being somewhat trained in engineering SDI should be planned to fail with a simple repaie - fail soft.- fail safe.
