need new laptop today

Hey all... my laptop went dead on me.. need to buy a replacement today...

I just want a small laptop, (with a PCI slot preferrably for P2 card offloads) that I can use for writing and email/internet. I don't need to be able to do any editing or anything on there (maybe occasionally some SD stuff). What would you recommend? I'd like to keep it under $700 if possible. Thanks.

Yeah, going to go check that out tonight. I'm hoping I can find something... the other issue becomes that I want XP on the computer, not Vista, which means I'll have to reformat the machine after purchase, which is always a pain.

If you look in the large business section of Dell's site, they have a lot more of what they call "legacy" options like cardbus and XP.

Yeah again, the timing thing. I gotta stay connected to stuff and can't be out too long... especially shipping over the weekend would be a pain.

If you need it now....look on Craigslist too. You might get lucky and find a PC locally.

Other than that, yes Best Buy is probably best. Good luck finding an XP machine though. Darn company partnering :)

Stay away from HP. They're crap. I bought a Fujitsu from Fry's, but it was a little on the pricey side. You might be able to find a Fujitsu for less than 1000 bucks at Fry's.

Another good laptop is a Toshiba.

Funny this thread should pop up today because yesterday I realized getting my hands on a laptop would be good. All I need is the very basic. I want to be able to write on it and use the internet for email, DVXuser and other assorted surfing. I want it cheap. And by cheap I mean DIRT CHEAP. I can't afford to spend a lot of money on something I am not going to use very much.

Regarding Lenovo, seem like great products. I would love to have one. I have a very old IBM that used to run Windows 95 and is still kicking but it isn't doing what I need it to be doing. :(

Regarding this:

Stay away from HP. They're crap.

I would have to say your post is crap, sir. I purchased my HP desktop almost two years ago and couldn't be happier. This machine is a beast, the price was great and it runs like no other. Their customer service kicks ass and I have been so pleased I bought the HP flat screen monitor and Photo Printer. We even got another identical system because this one is so great and have a whole little HP wireless network here.

Disagree on HP. Never been anything but satisfied.

I originally bought an HP and the wireless adapter was screwed up so I took it back (before getting the Fujitsu) and the guy who I returned it to said, "Oh, did the video go bad on it? A bunch of these are coming back with bad video" and I told him "No, the wireless adapter isn't working."

My apartment manager has one and it's not that old. When he boots up, he gets a S.M.A.R.T message. It started giving him video problems recently, so I went over to help him out. When I tried booting it up, it gave me a hal.dll which is a hardware problem.

Needless to say, I'll never buy an HP laptop.
