Need manuals

Long story short, Adobe tech support via Adobe's distant call
centers leaves much to be desired.
Is there a better route for quick questions and quick correct answers?
I have a fresh install of Production Premium 5.5 and I tried to invoke an
Encore session by it self, not called up by Premiere and got error
messages that
msvcr71.dll was missing. I guess calling Encore with Premiere provides
the file...starting Encore by itself
does not. Telephone tech support in a far away land told me I would
first: have to uninstall and reinstall
Creative suite. A search of the Adobe forum told me I had to copy the
missing file from Bridge and place it
in Encore's folder. I took a leap of faith and tried it. That worked. Fortunately the experience of being
around computers for a while told me not to follow
the tear it all out and start over advice.
I am away from the internet on my editing machine by choice. Did I
screw myself by not getting hard copy for the Suite and opting for
the download version? I need the manuals! I'm working blind here.

I got the physical shipment, but I didn't get anything more than you documentation wise. I have noticed something that could help you... When you go to the on-line help page, there is a link on the upper right side of the page that says "view as pdf" and once you are viewing that you can save that for later off-line use.

Even the disk verion does not come with printed manuals. And, unfortunately, the included Help file requires an Internet connection to work.

Personally, I need the 'Net for my work, so I have my edit rig connected. If you know what you're doing, and it sounds like you do, you'll have no issues connecting yours.

Did not know all you get are the disks...almost a grand and Adobe can't throw in a few manuals. Nice guys.
Well, if there was a spot where one could download all the related pdfs I could live with that. I'm keeping my editor away from the net so I don't have to
run anti virus stuff and put up with scans and updates. Also, I lack personal control...if I can surf (and download stuff) at the click of the mouse, I will.

You can probably ask this sort of question to the appropriate fora on the Adobe site... don't think what DLL's that are or are not loaded would
be in any manual...

I have the full hardcopy manuals for CS3, and there is no mention of libraries or 'internal' things...

As a note... since you mention 'DLL', I'm presuming you are on a MS Windows machine, but is your OS Windows 7, XP, Vista??? I don't know if that makes a difference since
I'm on a Mac, but Adobe has 'retired' support for various OS's or levels...

I'm surprised that you get this on Encore only, as msvcr71.dll is not an 'adobe' but a MS Windows DLL.

Here's a link discussing this sort of thing...

http://forums.adobe.com/thread/846332 has the problem and answer in the first post. It worked for them and it worked for me. I would think it would be an asset for Adobe phone tech support to be aware of the solutions their own company has published for their software, but hey...it worked, I'm happy. I'd be happier with either printed manuals or a location where I could download the electronic equivelant.
And yes, online stuff can be updated...and downloaded at regular intervals to add to the electronic version manual. I'd be very happy then indeed.

Update

Jim Simon came up with the solution...

Give this a try. There's a PDF link in the top right corner.

http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premierepro/cs/using/index.html

I've checked and the same pdf exists for each app.

Seriously guys...

www.google.com and enter your error or question into the little field.

As Ann said, online documentation gets updated and printed documentation does not.

A printed manual is nothing more than additional package weight and a waste of time, money, and trees.

What's next? "For a grand I was expecting it to come on 3.5" floppies"?

You don't think Google was my first, 2nd and third avenue for an answer? You must have the Midas touch in searching. Printed manual is just extra weight?
Some folks like to read, some folks don't.

Have you verified you don't have the DLL in question installed into the System or System32 folder?

Did a quick search of the PDF versions of the manual (something that can't be done with the printed version...) for any mention of DLL... none... so having a manual, printed or electronic, will not help you in your problem with dll's not loading, not being found, not being in the right place for all applications...

Two seperate issues really, wouldn't expect the code to be discussed in the manual. I would expect tech support to be conversant in common problems and solutions the company was aware of. The Adobe forum response solved my issue and showed me where to go from now on. The forum also came through for pdf files equaling the printed manual.

Nope. You screwed yourself by not having 'net access on your editing machine. I have an idea why you did it; I considered the same thing myself. But sanity prevailed. I knew I would always have questions and would need the 'net to find the answers.

One thing you can do if you want is download the manuals (PDF format) on a connected machine and move them to your editing machine so you can access them with a local instance of Adobe Reader. Another option is to get a cheap computer to be your 'net access and set it right beside your editing machine (you can use it during those long renders to check your email ;-). Or use a smart phone for 'net access. But the most reasonable answer is probably to connect. If it really bugs you, you can always unplug your Ethernet cable when you aren't accessing the 'net -- ain't no law that says you have to be continuously connected.

Here's a question for ya. What are you doing for software updates? That's going to be a PITA with a machine that's not on the 'net. Just sayin'.

Try hitting F1, it will open the Adobe Community Help. It would have given you the .dll solution also.

Here's one for you...

[h=2] [..\..\src\component\componentchain.cpp-496][/h]
what does this little beauty mean?

I'm keeping my editor away from the net so I don't have to run anti virus stuff and put up with scans and updates.

You only need to do that if you're editor doesn't know what he's doing when it comes to Internet common sense. If that describes your editor, hire a new one.

I lack personal control...if I can surf (and download stuff) at the click of the mouse, I will.

There's nothing wrong with that. Just do it on a second machine. I have three hooked up via KVM switch - edit, office and personal. All three are hooked up to the 'Net, but only the personal has antivirus software on it.

Also, I lack personal control...if I can surf (and download stuff) at the click of the mouse, I will.

That sounds like a personal problem...when I'm at work, I want to kill some of my co-workers but I understand it would be stupid and the repercussions would be....bad...therefore, I don't do it.

What a problem it is...my behavior has me incarcerated in a Peruvian max security prison...solitary confinment, meager meals...bitter cold...and a software package on a new PC that gives errors no one can/will interpret for me. My jailers taunt me with dll. hell jokes and the like. I've drilled a hole in my cell wall to look longingly out at the world where somewhere out there is an answer to these error codes...sigh...

I think this thread should be moved to the 'script writing' section at this point...

As a note, while this may be just legend and lore, but I think the peruvian 'max security prison', is a grave... rather than maintain someone, just shoot them... on the other hand, some of the descriptions of prisons in Mexico and South America, sound more like the set of "Escape from New York", where the prisoners are just tossed into a walled city, and pretty much self-organize and fend for themselves most of the time on the inside...

I think the latter would probably lead to intermittent Internet, based on how much payolla had been passed around, and lead to a situation where in order to continue your filmmaking work, you'd have to become far more selfsufficient than most people are these days...
