Hey guys,

So I just got a GH4 and my 2008 Mac Pro does not edit well with the 4k files, either on a 4k timeline or 1980 timeline.

My current setup:
2 x 2.8 GHZ Quad Core Intel Xeon
10 GB 667 DDR2 Ram
GTX 285
GT 120
2.5 TB HDD

Because my Mac is quite old, I'm thinking of building my own PC so I was wondering what setups you guys recommend. My budget would be around $1500.

Thanks!

What software are you using?

Have you run Geekbench on your current setup to see where it stands performance wise? You can compare it to standard benchmarks of other computers (PC and Mac) that way.

You can also upgrade your processors via One World Computing -- it's not cheap, but depending on your year and model of your Mac Pro you can get a significant boost in performance (ie going from 6/8 cores to 12 core can be a big performance boost).

Your bottleneck are your graphics cards. Those things are ancient. Upgrading to at a least a 650ti would make a huge difference. That said--

But for a good/pro 4k editor you will need to spent more then 1500 bcks

If all he's dealing with are the GH4 4k files then he doesn't need to spend 1500. My system cost me around 600 bucks and it edits the native GH4 4k files great. They are relatively low bit rate compared to other 4k formats.

Can you tell me your system set up that cost you 600 bucks? I'm willing to spend more of course but I just am going to be editing native GH4 files in the near future.

I already had hard drives, monitors and all those peripherals, so it was about 600 just for the computer itself.

GA-Z87M-D3H motherboard

Intel i5 4440 quad core 3.1 ghz processor

GeForce GTX 650 Ti graphics card

8gb ram

Cooler Master Elite 335u case with built in 420w power supply

The system actually worked pretty damn well with just the integrated Intel HD4600 graphics on the CPU, although I've only cut 4k since upgrading the graphics to the 650ti. But it was cutting Prores HQ 1920x1080 just fine. I've tested 4k R3D files and they play pretty smooth at 1/2 res.

For a hard drive I have a 4 disk USB 3.0 RAID array which works great, but the GH4 files stream fine off a single USB 3.0 as well, or even FW800.

Search will Urbina 1500 PC build (not 100% on the last name), he built a nice video editing PC for 1500. If you like fcpx get an iMac, I can't stand it so I built a PC for $2000 and it edits 4k like butter

May I ask about your current computer specs? I'm checking out the video you just sent me right now.

I've been quite pleased with my new PC build at your target price.

Asrock Extreme 4 TB4 mobo with Thunderbolt and USB3 ports
Intel i7 4770K 3.5GHZ proc mildly overclocked to 4GHZ on standard air cooling.
16GB Gskill 1866 certified ram
MSI Nvidia GTX760 2GB GPU
Seagate 2TB hybrid system drive
Seagate 2TB NAS media drive
Coolermaster N430 mid tower case with hot swap E-sata drive bay
LG blu-ray burner.
Will be adding a raid array to this at some point for editing DNG raw and 10bit DPX 2k, but it should scream as is for normal compressed video editing. Disk I/O speed is my only significant bottleneck.
Runs Resolve 11 light well if you have any interest in that. Plays 2k dng raw timelines at full 24fps real time in Resolve.

If you try Edius on a lower end system it'll edit native 4K no problem. It smoked the competition 4 years ago editing native AVCHD and h.264 on a $650 Gateway i5 laptop. There is a free 30 day demo at Grass Valley's website.
