Stephen, yes I tried local recording numerous times.
Barry, I completely understand, and you're absolutely right. Nothing is too obvious.
Yes, I did differentiate the two f/w ports, using the one labeled DV something or other for the camera and the one labeled "computer" for the computer.
After seeing the creation of the folder and the attempted creation of an mxf file while putting the FS into record mode via local controls, I'm fairly convinced that something is wrong with the 1394 communication, namely there is none. The FS is not seeing the camera and the camera isn't seeing the FS.
The reason this unit is available to me to test is that the local distributor took it back from a customer that had a heart attack a few days after he bought it and had to drop plans for a project. It was like new, of course, but both the FS and the camera had been opened and at least tested by this buyer. I don't know if he could have screwed up the f/w port on one of the pieces or something like that. As I examine the ports with a flashlight, they look okay to me. But if it's not a damaged port, I'm ready to conclude that one or both of these units has a defective firewire interface.
I hate to throw in the towel, but I'm tired of dealing with it. And if the very bright, knowledgable, and helpful folks here can't find a reason for it, I give up. I'll check the thread tomorrow morning just in case someone has a eureka moment. But I've wasted enough of you guys' time.
Thanks again to everyone who took time to read, test, answer, and make suggestions. Much appreciated, even if it was for nought.
Barry_Green said:Okay, another pathetic stab at pointing out the ridiculously obvious... there are of course two ports on the FS-100, one for connecting to the camera and the other for connecting to the computer. You plugged the camera cable into one port, and disconnected that cable and plugged the computer cable in the other port, yes?
I have no doubt you've taken all these steps; it's just that as a computer programmer I've encountered many situations where the most complex issue was solved by remedying the silliest mistake, so I'm just trying to throw anything into the mix here that might help...
