Need help

Hey there, I am new to the Forum, just signed up today. I figured this was the place to turn for help with this problem I am having with editing. I was a user of Avid Xpress Pro, and now I have made the move to Media Composer 5. The problem is that the program is not allowing me to load my finished projects from Xpress Pro in Media Composer. The footage is shot on the HVX 200 and was stored on an external hard drive in P2 Folders. I have no idea what the problem may be. I have been at this for two days now since I got my new system for editing. The odd thing is that other projects that were captured from mini dv tapes have no problem loading in Media COmposer 5. I have already discovered that you must disable AMA to have the old option to import P2/clips to bin, but still, I am having problems with it. When I open and playback the completed timeline, the music plays, however the video is offline.

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. Once I figure this out, I can move forward with new system...

Try to RIGHT CLICK on the sequence giving you problems and RELINK. When relinking is finished it will make a new sequence called RELINKED.XYZ in your bin (xyz is name of old sequence). Load that into your right Composer monitor (selecting the relinked sequence as active) and see if that does the trick.

Thank you very much, I will try that however, it is the original P2 clips that are still being shown as offline and thus I cannot play the finished projects from Avid Xpress. I will definitely have to figure this out as my mobile "Card Dumping" laptop still uses Xpress pro 5.8. I thought this would be a lot easier to just transfer over than it has proven to be. I have no more ideas, but have more projects coming up very soon. I assume everybody else had to move from Xpress to Media Composer as well, but no one seems to know or have any idea how to remedy this problem...

Do you have the MXF files on your dirive or do they have the P2 card folder hierarchy?

They are in the P2 card folder hierarchy....I have no problems opening them in my old AVX Pro system. It is on the new system I am having the difficulties. I still cannot open them up from way back when I posted this topic...Very annoying I tell you.

Do what MickeyP said...try to RELINK. But really, Avid Media Composer likes the files to be in the proper Avid file structure...which is the Avid Mediafiles foder, then MXF, then numbered folder. Not sure how to get from where you are to there with Express. Try relinking though.

I will certainly try it. The odd thing is that some of my projects which are saved in the same way and on the same drive will open no problem, but it is the selective failure which is really annoying. In the past with Xpress Pro I never had this problem. I am worried that when I go to do my next project it for (it's own) reasons will not work properly. I just don't understand how this problem can selectively occur. As I said, I have other projects on my drive saved in the same exact way and they work, but "selected" projects do not open. It just doesnt make any sense when I have not altered any of the files to make them unrecognizable as P2 footage. I guess I can be glad that the projects are done otherwise I would be screwed. However, moving forward I do not want to have this problem again. I will still have to use my laptop for dumping footage which of course still has express on it.

In any case, I am about to give up on it and go back to Xpress if I cannot get this problem solved. It was broken before I upgraded software, but now this selective problem continues...

I don't know if you still have your files on the external hard drive or not but if you are using them in the project and your footage is in the external you should try and bring your footage on to the internal maybe it would read it better.

Didn't work. I guess I am glad the projects are already complete. The odd thing is that I have other projects on the same drive(P2 folders of course) that open up with no problem. I have no idea why this program is selectively screwing around with my projects. I am really concerned that moving forward, I will not be able to get to my footage., especially since I will still be using my laptop to dump the footage on location. I am trying to avoid doing it DIT style and bringing my tower to the set with monitor and all. Even so, the way it looks that may not even work. A month later after trying to resolve this issue and I am still screwed with the problem unresolved. Geez, why did I ever bother to upgrade the software. As they say, if it isn't broken don't try to fix it. I am literally at the point where I am about to just give up and go back to using express pro even though outdated, at least it works...

No idea what to do.

They are still on the external drive. But as I wrote in other posts, there are P2 projects on the same drive that I have no problem opening up and working on. I did nothing different with the files that will not open versus the ones that will open. I was even able to re-cut a P2 project but still cannot open the ones that persist in giving me problems. Grrrrr....this sucks A$$...

Don't copy the xpress pro projects across - create new projects and copy your xpress pro bins into those (don't copy across the settings folder either).
