got the dvx a week before my trip to nepal to shoot a doc - been editing since jan - finally finished and it looks bad through export process - i shot on 24p normal - (didn't know what i was doing) - i captured 24 in fc - tried both 24 and 29.9 in sequence and exported both versions the first as qt to mpeg in compressor - the bit rate is too large to fit on dvd - so i exported 29.9 in qt conversion mpeg - it looks terrible and choppy - i couldn't print to tape (haven't figured it out yet) - recorded through the timeline to dvx - that looks terrible also - what can i do - please help - i have been working on this project for months and i feel sick - any suggestions are greatly appreciated

definitely need to use a 29.9 timeline, and make sure you captured at 29.9 as well. use compressor to export, but use the DVD export feature and pick the length. it has always worked quite well for me..

I don't use FCP but I am sure you will be fine if just burn some DVDs at different settings. Export a 2 minute clip at every setting you can and eventually you will scream with joy that you found the magic setting.
Sucks when you don't have the quality but once you get there you stop talking crap about all this technology and start sleeping with you DVX on your side and editing system on the other side.

ahhhhh

ahhhhh

tried too many different settings none of which are working - i had made a short copy 7 min to apply for a grant - exported using qt uncompressed and this is the only one that looks good on dvd - i've tried to do this with the 30 min film and it stops 5 min before the end - every setting i try results in choppy looking video in high movement shots - any suggestions?

you captured 24 fps? I'm guessing that's whats wrong.

When you shoot 24p you need to capture regular NTSC 29.97, because that's what 24p normal is.

If you shoot 24pA, you need to use the remove advanced pulldown setting.

if you capture 24 its going to delete random frames and make your footage choppy

Have you tried changing the bitrate? I use Adobe Premiere and then Adobe Encore to burn my DVD. I don't know how FCP doos it but Adobe you export whatever format and at the same time screw around with preset. I see many options and start changing numbers and sliding dials. I have CBR and VBR with progressive and 1 or 2 pass.

I f you can't figure it out then goto the grant people with a couple of socks and do your best puppet show representing your work!
