need help with audio dubbing

I need to dub sound from a cassette player to my DVX100A. I'm using the RCA inputs on the camera. I managed to get the dubbing message to appear on the VCR mode screen display only once, and can't get it to show up anymore. It was working fine, VU meters were moving, I just can't get the camera to do it again.
Does anybody know how to do audio dubbing onto the DVX100A? There is very little about this in the manual. I have to get the sound onto a mini-DV tape, and I'd like to do it at home versus spending a lot of money to have someone else do it. Thanks for your help.

Re: need help with audio dubbing

You should just be able to put the camer in VTR mode, hook up the cassette to the RCA inputs, and press "record" on the DVX... that *should* work. You don't need to go into the audio overdub mode, which is only designed to add audio tracks on top of an existing DV recording.

Re: need help with audio dubbing

Thanks for your reply, Barry. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to work. I've tried recording in camera mode and the VTR mode, neither one gives me a sound signal. I've switched to "line" from "mic" on the front switches. I can't think of anything else to try. Maybe you just can't record anything through the RCA imputs. :-[

Re: need help with audio dubbing

You definitely can, I've done it before...

The XLR's only work as inputs, and only when the camera is in "camera" mode. The RCA's work as inputs only when the camera is in VTR mode and recording, and work as outputs at all other times.

"line/mic" only affects the XLR's, in camera mode.

Hmmm, now that I think about it, maybe it's related to the DV Passthru feature? Do you have a firewire plugged into your camera? Definitely unplug the firewire... firewire overrides the analog inputs by default. There's a menu setting you can change that makes the analogs override the firewire, but I don't remember what it is. But if you don't have the firewire plugged in, the analogs should be the default input signal.

Try unplugging the firewire and setting the camera to VTR mode, and the analog inputs should work...

Re: need help with audio dubbing

I don't have the firewire plugged in.
I've tried recording in the VTR mode. The VU meters show nothing. One time I was able to get the VU meters to work - in the audio dub mode. I'm using a standard Sony cassette deck.
Maybe my camera is somewhat broken. I've already sent it in twice for warranty repairs on the tape transport, but that should not affect recording sound.
