Need help! What .mov settings are the best

Ok ! I would like to post some of my work for you all critique.
Every time I piece I try to render out as web .mov it turns out like Shitz. If not it is usually very large in size.
I look at most all of yours and it looks and sounds great!
I use Vegas 4.0. What settings to you all use to get the results you do.
I thought I knew what I was doing. Apparently not!
HELP!
Thanks you all for any input.

Re: Need help! What .mov settings are the best

YOu might try rendering out to a wmv9. I have had great success with that.

Re: Need help! What .mov settings are the best

I second Bryster's question as I've encountered the exact same problems. WMV9 is great and works just fine, but not everyone has the player yet, and say I *also* want or need to output to QT... which are the best settings ?

Re: Need help! What .mov settings are the best

if you watched a QT sample that looks good, go to movie > get movie properties and find almost all what you need to know about the encoding.
i find mpeg4 to be a good one. sorenson makes the best mpeg4 encoder.
your bitrate shouldn't be less than half, or more than two times the height x width x fps / 48000
hope that helps

You guys rock! ;D
Thank you so much... Looks like it is the data bit rate, by the size of the out put video, makes a big difference on how the quality and size comes out. I new audio can cause large files sizes. Now I know what to experiement with. Think I can handle it.
When I get my web sight up.. I will post some of my stuff.
Thanks again! ;)

Another tidbit... The Sorenson "Pro" (Squeeze) application uses a 2-pass encoder and will make QT files MUCH smaller at very good quality. The standard MPEG4/Sorenson "Basic" encoder requires higher bitrates/sizes to produce decent quality.

Alright

I will be getting some footage up pretty soon as well. I am going to UPGRADE to QT PRO...

Are you saying that Sorenson is another Application Ill most likely need?

IS it best to also have WP9?

Re: Need help! What .mov settings are the best

John, you've got what you need in Vegas. You can output to MPEG-4 using Sorensen 3 with Vegas.

You can also output to WM9.

I prefer to have both myself.  Actually, up until now I have typically used Window Media files exclusively due to their good quality, good size and free distribution with the latest OS's.  But, the unfortunate thing for me is that I am finding myself using my MAC more and more...And there is not a WM9 encoder for MAC (although there is a player...Hmmm?). Apple is adding the QT install to the PC as part of their iTunes application. Sneaky. :)

Regardless, Yes Sorenson Squeeze is an additional application (not cheap).  It is what you see a lot of Hollywood movie trailers encoded with.  There is a PC and MAC version.  The PC version actually supports more formats (including WM9).

Hope this helps!

Correct. But you do not have the PRO encoder version of Sorenson 3.

Nope. Just wanted to make sure John knew that he already has a version of Sorenson (not to mention WM9), though! 8)

Very true! No need to spend the cash, unless necessary or unhappy with the results. Good point.

Re: Need help! What .mov settings are the best

Aggghhhhh!

Im all confused now! My wife is laughing at me!

Okay, let me get this straight. I have Vegas 4.0. What does this mean? Is the Sorenson 3 Pro absolutley needed? Or is for insanely quick downloading times for the viewers?

Also,

I plan on getting QT Pro. I need this, right?

Aggghhh!

Re: Need help! What .mov settings are the best

No. You have the Sorensen 3 codec already. The Pro codec will let you have smaller file sizes, but you don't *need* that for high-quality QTs. They'll just be a larger file size.

I don't have QT Pro; have never needed it. I usually output to WM9, though.

Re: Need help! What .mov settings are the best

:D

Thanks Jubal!

So I dont need it. Although if I want it it will allow me to compress large files.

Is it in my bene to get QT PRO or is that something I don't need either? I admit, I'm partial to QT.

Im being redundant but you know how I get with the tech stuff! I just want to direct!

Re: Need help! What .mov settings are the best

I don't know if QT Pro actually adds anything above what Vegas gives you. But for $30, it can't hurt.

Re: Need help! What .mov settings are the best

BTW, I hear ya on the just wanting to direct. I want to learn as much as I can, but being the world's greatest cinematographer isn't on my list of priorities . . . :P

Re: Need help! What .mov settings are the best

:D I know that I need to learn as much of the technical details as possible while I can.  I also know that this is nothing but a bene for me in making my own 'shorts/videos/specs/movies'.

Furthermore, I know that the more I learn in the realm of DP the better I will be able to communicate 'to a DP' if I ever reach my goals.

Sigh....

Re: Need help! What .mov settings are the best

I just wanna make the pictures in my head appear on my screen. 8)

Kinda what we all want, I guess!
