i use vegas and love it but my old machine finally died. i am going to finally upgrade but i have a few questions...

from what i have read using the search function, the faster the cpu the faster vegas will render, so is there a difference between the intel duo processor 6850 and the quad core 6850 extreme? if so, what is the difference? i ask because i am going to try and buy a dell machine and there is a 1000$ difference between the two. the ghz seems almost the same, is this the only stat pertinent to how vegas will perform? am i missing something?

i have a dvx not the hvx.

i also read where vegas does not use the graphics card. but magic bullets does? if so, is there a difference in graphics cards between 128 mb and 256 mb? what is best?

thank you very much

Sounds like you are trying to choose between smoking fast and smoking fast +.
Save the $1000, get 2GB RAM and at least two drives, preferably three. Programs only on your main drive, video on your second or second and third.
Also, great source of info here: http://www.videoguys.com/system.htm

Unfortunately, "smoking fast" only has any relevance for about a month. Then it's just "really fast." Soon after it's average. Within a year it's behind the curve.

Having just bought a new computer, I can tell you this: Since I only edit DVX footage, there's only so much horsepower I need. My new system is, by no means, a high-end system, but it's wayyyyy faster than the 5-year-old machine I was editing with. I'm a happy guy and I didn't have to spend a ton.

Just something to think about. Speed is relative.

the best bang for your buck...

graphics - nvidia 8800 gt

this chart shows performance times.

thank you to all for all the info! I do wish to purchase a smoking fast machine- well, as per today's standards. i am about to edit a full length feature that i am about 90% done shooting.

i came across a rendering test here... http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=4&MessageID=544487

it was done on high def and not standard but it gives an idea as to what each set up can do.

what do you think of these results?

thank you also for the graphics card info. i will def buy a nvidia card.

i also own a g-sata 500gb external drive. so i suppose i should only buy one new drive and then use my g-sata as the drive to collect my video?

what is optimal drive wise?

again, many thanks.

it shows that an overclocked quad is the way to go.

if you want the fastest, this is it.

if you want the best value, go with a 500 gb SATA drive with 16mb of cache.
