GH2 Need help: preventing AF twitching

Hi all- I'm using a GH2 for my blog videos, and I've run into a consistent problem: AF twitching. Is there a way to turn down the sensitivity/speed of the autofocus response on the GH2?

I don't think it was bad enough to be distracting. Is there a cameraman or just you/as the person in the video?

If using AF, in the menu turn off CONTINUOUS AF (page 43 in pdf manual). Before record, you need to have the target subject in focus - with the continuous off it won't hunt beyond that point once you record. As suggested, if you have a cameraman they could just manually focus on the subject with the focus ring and it also won't hunt.

If it's just you, you can flip the screen around and, if close enough, reach out to use the touchscreen to touch on the subject you want in focus while in one of the AF modes; AFS/AFC along with the sub-dial setting of "1-area-focusing" (p. 83).

If just you and want to focus on yourself but too far away to reach the screen to touch, you can have something there in place of you to focus on which would be the same spot/distance and manually focus on it, then remove it and get in front of the camera.

Like was said, if you can have a target to focus on before you step into frame, then turn continuous AF off in the motion picture menu, that works well. Just focus it on something that you can take out of the shot.
Option 2, for that shot, is to change the autofocus mode to 23 area auto focus and the touch the right side of the screen so that it only uses the right 1/4 of the screen. For that shot I think it will work quite well as you pretty much fill up that area of the screen, so it shouldn't be hunting.

That said, I really don't know if it would be noticeable if I wasn't looking for it, but once you do notice it, it is kind of annoying.

Using focus lock "AF/AE Lock" will eliminate this issue. Custom menu settings allow this feature to be setup in a way which works best for you. I favor locking both AF and AE with a single button push, and having it stay locked until it is pushed again. The LCD will display a green dot in the upper right while locked.

Good shooting.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Hoping to use AF as that was one of the reasons to use this camera instead of my 7D :) - Does AF/AE lock just turn off AF, or is there something more to it?

Thanks,
Gavin

AF/AE Lock will lock subject focus and/or exposure similar to half pressing the shutter button, but will not allow focus and/or exposure to change until you unlock AF/AE Lock. Page 87 of the GH2 Manual explains in detail.

The wireless remote by Rainbow Imaging I got from amazon allows remote focus. The wireless unit you use in the hand has a button that works the same way as the shutter release on the camera, half press for autofocus (AFS is best), finish full press to start recording.

Only problem is the shoe mount part plugs into the mic jack so use of an external mic isn't possible. I use Zoom recorders for audio anyway and sync with the camera's audio track in editing. It's not hard.
