Need help offloading HDV footage

Using Sony HVR Z1U shot in 1080/60i. I have about 18 full tapes. I am using Express Pro HD 5.2. All I need to do is offload the footage from the tapes to harddrive. I am using the camera as a deck and hooked up via firewire. Do I need to set anything in the camera first?

Can someone walk me step by step. This will save me a lot of time if I can do it this weekend. I will be in your debt.

TIA

just capture like you regularly do it. The camera should automatically read it as HDV (hence the HDV light is on).

Plug in the firewire cable, turn on AVID, and goto toolset, and there should be a capture. click it and the capture window will open. it should automatically read everything fine. If not, automatically load the deck by clicking the button right below the vcr controls (play, pause, etc.) Click it and goto autoconfigure. It will prompt that if its ok. Just click ok and that should automatically load your deck (camera).

Label the tape as it prompts you.. (New tape). and click OK. Click the big red thing with the white dot in the middle (the record button) and let it record. Thats it.

One thing I would do is to set your capture settings to infinite record time. goto your settings ~> capture ~> OMF mediafiles. select capture to multiple files and change the 30 to 999.

Thats that.

My warnings with my experience with HDV:

rendering is going to be LONG..

you need a super computer to make this work. I have a dell precision 470. dual xeon 2ghz cmputer w 2gb ddr2 ram. without a good computer it wont run. Maybe you can capture, but it will have errors reading the HDV files.

the good thing is that since it renders twice as long, the file size is not twice as big.

exporting back to tape will take forever too. to do so, when you are done with a sequence, export as a HDV file. took me about 3 hours to export 30 minutes of video.

HDV works well on avid, just the rendering will take forever, and its not native out. But hey, I rather use this than pinnacle or anything else good luck.

This is actually my first time capturing the footage. My editor is away for a week and id rather offload it than have to rent a deck at another time. So this is what I have done so far.

Z1U connected via firewire.

- Camera is on, open up Express Pro HD, click on a new project, shared.
- type a project name, then under format check off 1080i/59.94 HDV
- 3 screens open - bin, superbin, composer
- CNTL+7 to open capture box
- in the capture box, I adjust the deck for the Z1U. leave preroll at 6 secs and fast cue at 30 and 60
- Type in a tape name and click ok
- under channel selection, There is V, A1-A8, and TC
- I checked V and TC. Do I check A1 and A2 as well?
- under the capture settings, i changed to 999 for recording time. Anything else to change or add? Stop capture if a bad frame is detected?
- then hit Red record button.

I am using Dual Xenon as well with 2gig ram. After capturing a sample and replaying back on windows media player. Very slow. Video is not smooth. Is what I am seeing what I downloaded or is it the computer? Good thing I dont have to render this, just capture video.

When I am loading my first project tape, I get "A drop frame tape was inserted. A non drop frame tape was expected. Please insert the correct non drop frame tape."

What does this mean? on the Settings under the general tab, I checked to "off" stop capture if a bad frame is detected.

Any help, all i want to ensure is that I am offloading this properly. Do not need to edit or render.

TIA
