Need help desperately! 7d footage freezing in fcp

OK. I don't know what to do. I have been editing 7D footage that I've shot in FCP for around 4 months now. I recently have run into a problem with footage freezing on my timeline.

I shot some footage in 720p 60fps and other footage in 1080p 24 fps. I know this can be a problem but up til now I haven't ever encountered 1. I typically convert my footage using MPEG stream using a 7D preset I obtained from a DVXUser thread. I convert my 720p 60fps footage to 24fps using Cinema Tools.

My FCP version is 6.0.6

My footage freezes for a while then speeds up to catch up to the timeline. Once it catches up it plays correctly for about 4 seconds and then does it all over again.

Thanx!

What dedicated media drive are you using? If this is a desktop MacPro, it should be SATA.

If it is a MacBookPro, it should be at least FW800, preferably a FW800 Raid such as CalDigit VR.

No USB external HDD can handle either 720/60p or 1080 24p ProRes if that is what you converted to.

In fact USB is too slow for most variants of HD.

Let me try to clarify two issues.

1. What codec do you convert the 7D footage to? Pro Res? DVCProHD, or what?

2. Where doesn't the converted footage reside? Is it a FW800 external hard disk drive?

Because the FW800/SCANDISK card reader just mounts cards? It doesn't act as a dedicated media hard drive.

OK. Just a few questions.

1. What would be an ideal drive for Pro Res footage?

2. Is there another codec I can convert my 7D footage to other than Pro Res. If so where can I copy the preset?

Thanks David :)

Sorry David,

Computer Specs.:

Model Name: MacBook Pro 15"
Model Identifier: MacBookPro2,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP22.00A5.B07
SMC Version: 1.12f5

Over kill I know :)

You can use MPEG StreamClip or Toast 10 to convert to DVCProHD.

And if you are on FCP 7, you can convert to ProRes LT.

I'm not certain what you refer to by a "preset."

I'm on FCP 6.0.6.

Just to clarify. By converting my 7D footage to DVCPro HD rather than Apple ProRes I can avoid these Freeze issues and still use the drive I currently have or will I still need to purchase another drive.

If so can you give me the name of a drive that I can go out and purchase today that will satisfy the problems I'm having?

Thanks David

I use FCP 6.0.6. on my iMac dual core and use a Lacie FW800, I only do ProRes....no problems at all.

What size and frame rate of prores?

Which variant of pro res?

How streams of pro res?

I can answer this as I have a MBP with FCP 6.0.6.

When I first started editing heavily a couple of months ago I actually used the internal HD with no problems. I then went external with a firewire 400 drive which worked pretty good, but had some problems. Now I edit with an eSata external hard drive and it works great 95% of the time.

The only issue is sometimes the computer chugs with heavy color grading but other then that I would say it's pretty solid.

All of my footage is converted to Apple Pro Res HQ.

My MBP specs are

2.2Ghz
4Gb Ram
8600 Nvidia card with 128mb ram
External esta 1tb Drive ( connected via express card )

I am going to be upgrading my computer soon, but for now it works really good and this is a 3 year old computer editing 1920x1080p 24fps ProRes HQ Footage

Any reason you are using HQ?

For the life of me, it is so hard to see a different between the various kinds.

Actually, in FCP7, LT looks good.

Don't quote me on this, but IMO Pro Res HQ holds up better online. It might be in my mind or maybe I'm seeing things, but I think the colors pop slightly more with HQ, but other than that I don't really think there is a big difference, I guess that's the OCD in me? I would really like if Barry or someone who does test professionally can clearly prove this though....
