Need help creating effect in Vegas

I'm looking to create the effect of a person having an out of body experiance. What I would like to do is show someone sleeping, then have this person wake up and step out of his own body in a translucent type of way. I hope I explained this correctly. Detailed instructions would be needed since I am fairly new to Vegas.

Thanks

When shooting, lock your camera down (it must not move for this to work).
Shoot both scenes, person sleeping, and then person getting up.

In Vegas, place both clips on the timeline with the clip of the person waking up on a track directly on top of the clip of the person sleeping.

Adjust the opacity of the "waking up" clip to give the person the translucency you want.

As long as the camera (as well as anything else in the scene besides the talent) doesn't move, the effect should work quite well.

Thanks I'll give this a try.

Hi Ray -

I did this effect for a short a while back. The problem you'll have using the opacity method is that the original body will not look correct (you probably found this out already.) In order to get it right, you have to mask out one of the characters (either the body or the ghost) and yeah, its a pain. I did it frame by frame in AE and the results were pretty impressive. Hope that helps.

Yeah, that makes sense. The clip overlay, even at reduced opacity, will make the "original" body look transparent -- not because it is, but because the empty table will be overlayed on top of it, even if partially transparent.
